Job summary

Cooley LLP seeks an IP Litigation Paralegal to join the IP Litigation team. The paralegal supports all phases of IP litigation from filing to discovery, trial, and post-trial work, coordinating with attorneys and vendors as needed.

Requirements include a Bachelor's degree with 3+ years IP litigation experience, proficiency in MS Office and iManage, and the ability to work overtime. Preferred are Concordance, Case Logistix, Relativity knowledge and a Paralegal Certificate.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; paralegal certificate preferred.
  • 3+ years IP litigation support experience, including patent matters.
  • Experience with USPTO inter partes review and re-examination proceedings.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and iManage; ability to work OT.

Responsibilities

  • Provide paralegal support for patent litigation in federal courts, appeals, ITC and PTAB matters.
  • Organize discovery materials and trial prep, including e-discovery coordination.
  • Document management, Bates-numbering, redaction, scanning and indexing.
  • Prepare deposition logistics, witness files, and exhibits; attend depositions with attorneys.
  • Draft motions/briefs, create briefing books, and file electronically as needed.
  • Bill a minimum of 1600 hours annually; maintain time sheets and administrative duties.

Job description

IP Litigation Paralegal Cooley is seeking an IP Litigation Paralegal to join the IP Litigation team.

Position Summary

The IP Litigation Paralegal is responsible for providing paralegal support during all phases of the IP litigation process, from the commencement of a new action to the discovery period and through trial and post-trial findings and appeals. The paralegal will be expected to handle diverse and multiple responsibilities, which includes but is not limited to the following:

Position Responsibilities
  • Provide paralegal support for patent litigation in federal district courts, appeals before the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, and actions before the U.S. International Trade Commission and Patent Trial and Appeal Board.
  • Organize materials for all phases of discovery and trial preparation, including coordination of electronic and paper discovery, patent file histories, depositions, transcripts.
  • Document and information management: Organize and maintain case material and e-rooms.
  • Prepare documents for Bates-numbering, redaction, duplication/scanning and indexing.
  • Categorize and maintain files in chronological, numerical, and subject matter order to meet IP litigation team objectives.
  • Work with Litigation Support & E-Discovery Services and vendors on e-discovery and electronic productions.
  • Under the guidance of an attorney, prepare chronologies, indices, and summaries of information and facts gleaned from discovery.
  • Conduct document searches and factual research: Work with Litigation Support to create and maintain internal case databases for the cataloging and retrieval of documents.
  • Conduct database searches and organize information retrieved in a coherent and concise manner.
  • Utilize library resources and conduct fact research from publicly available sources.
  • Prepare for and attend depositions: Coordinate deposition logistics.
  • Assist attorneys in preparing witness files and exhibits to be used at deposition.
  • Attend deposition with attorney to take notes, handle exhibits during the deposition, and digest transcripts to summarize highlights of a proceeding.
  • Motion practice and court filings: Assist in the drafting of motions and briefs.
  • Create briefing books Bluebook/Cite check, proofread, and assemble exhibits related to filing.
  • Electronically file brief or coordinate filing with Firm’s Managing Clerk or other designated personnel trained to e-file.
  • Coordinate service of process and courtesy copies.
  • Prepare for and attend trials: Coordinate trial logistics and liaison with Trial Support Manager, as necessary.
  • Organize and track exhibits, files and all other supporting documents.
  • Assist attorneys in the courtroom by taking notes and operating courtroom presentation software.
  • Assist in the preparation of witness testimony.
  • Other: Bill a minimum of 1600 hours annually.
  • Turn in time sheets, e-timelogs and fulfill other administrative duties in a timely fashion.
  • All other duties as assigned or required.
Skills & Experience

Required: Bachelor's Degree. 3+ years of IP Litigation experience having helped support litigating patent cases, including but not limited to life sciences, Hatch-Waxman, and ITC Section 337 matters. Experience with USPTO inter partes review and re‑examination proceedings. After orientation at Cooley LLP, exhibit proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, iManage and other firm applications. Available to work overtime, as required.

Preferred

Knowledge of automated litigation support software including Concordance, Case Logistix, and Relativity. Previous law firm experience. Paralegal Certificate.

Compensation & Benefits

Cooley LLP offers a competitive compensation and excellent benefits program. EOE. The expected hourly pay range for this position with a work schedule of 40 hours per week is $35.00 - $50.00 ($72,800.00 - $104,000.00 annually). Please note that final offer amount will be dependent on geographic location, applicable experience, and skillset of the candidate.
