Job description

Role summary

The IoT Engineer II designs, develops, tests, deploys, and supports software that connects retail devices and edge systems to secure, scalable cloud services. This engineer works across device integrations, telemetry and messaging, backend APIs, operational tooling, and web experiences used by engineering and support teams. The role independently delivers well-defined features, contributes to solution design, and improves the reliability and supportability of connected-device platforms.

What you will do
  • Develop and maintain IoT applications and services using Python, JavaScript, or TypeScript, including unit, integration, and automated test coverage.
  • Build software that runs on Linux-based edge devices and communicates with sensors, controllers, peripherals, gateways, and connected retail equipment.
  • Develop Python-based APIs and microservices for device onboarding, configuration, telemetry ingestion, command and control, and operational workflows.
  • Implement event-driven integrations using MQTT, Kafka, or comparable messaging technologies, with appropriate retry, ordering, durability, and failure-handling patterns.
  • Create React-based dashboards and administrative tools that improve fleet visibility, device health monitoring, diagnostics, and support workflows.
  • Deploy and operate containerized services using Kubernetes and public cloud platforms such as Azure or AWS.
  • Apply secure engineering practices, including authentication, authorization, certificate or token management, secrets handling, dependency management, and protection of device-to-cloud communications.
  • Build observability through structured logging, metrics, tracing, dashboards, and actionable alerts; participate in incident response, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions.
  • Contribute to requirements analysis, technical design, prototypes, code reviews, release readiness, documentation, and continuous improvement of engineering standards.
  • Partner with product, store operations, cybersecurity, networking, data engineering, support, and vendor teams to deliver reliable connected solutions.
Basic qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 2 years of professional experience in application development, software engineering, platform engineering, IoT, edge computing, or a related role.
  • Professional experience developing production software with Python and at least one of C, C++, JavaScript, or TypeScript.
  • Experience with RESTful APIs, automated testing, source control, pull requests, code review, and CI/CD practices.
  • Experience deploying or supporting applications in Azure, AWS, or another public cloud environment.
  • Working knowledge of Linux, networking fundamentals, and troubleshooting across application, device, and infrastructure layers.
  • Experience working in an Agile engineering team and using tools such as GitHub, Jira, and Confluence.
  • Ability to communicate technical decisions clearly and collaborate across engineering and business functions.
Preferred qualifications
  • Experience with connected-device platforms, device telemetry, fleet management, provisioning, remote configuration, or lifecycle management.
  • Experience with MQTT, Kafka, AMQP, or other event-driven and device-messaging technologies.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, infrastructure-as-code, and cloud-native operational practices.
  • Experience building React applications, support dashboards, or administrative interfaces.
  • Experience with relational databases such as MySQL and practical SQL development.
  • Familiarity with observability tools such as Datadog, Grafana, Splunk, Prometheus, or Azure Monitor.
  • Experience supporting retail technology, operational technology, connected appliances, sensors, digital displays, or other distributed hardware environments.
  • Knowledge of secure device identity, certificate-based authentication, secrets rotation, vulnerability management, and software supply-chain controls.
