This position is in the General Government Unit (GGU) at a Range 18.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) enforces compliance with the Alaska Workers’ Compensation Act through thorough and fair fraud investigations, accountability for violations, and proactive public education intended to prevent uninsured injuries. SIU values integrity, respect, dedication and commitment, accountability, and a collaborative team environment. This position directly supports the Division’s responsibility to promote compliance and protect Alaska workers and employers.
This position offers meaningful public-service work with a high degree of independence and variety. You will handle challenging investigations, collaborate with experienced investigators and partner agencies, and have opportunities for specialized training and professional development. The work combines analytical case development, field investigation, legal processes, and public education, providing a broad and engaging investigative workload.
This position is based in the Division of Workers’ Compensation office in midtown Anchorage and combines office-based research and case preparation with field work such as interviews, site visits, service of documents, and other investigative activity. The position requires local driving and occasional statewide travel, which may include remote locations, inclement weather, and travel by small aircraft or boat when necessary.

Equivalent to those typically gained by: Any combination of preparatory post-secondary education and/or progressively responsible investigative work experience performing duties such as locating and gathering information, evidence and/or testimony to be used in civil or criminal proceedings, administrative actions, or governmentally regulated activities which included preparing reports in support of attorneys or agencies engaged in administrative adjudication, and/or detecting and verify suspected fraud, licensing violations, and other violations of state law.
“Competencies” means a combination of interrelated knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors that enable a person to act effectively in a job or situation.
“Typically gained by” means the prevalent, usual method of gaining the competencies expected for entry into the job.
“Training” and “education” in this guidance are synonyms for the process of acquiring knowledge and skills through instruction. It includes instruction through formal and informal methods (such as classroom, online, self-study, and on-the-job), from accredited and unaccredited sources, and long-duration (such as a post-secondary degree) and short-duration (such as a seminar) programs.
