Coastal Carolina University is currently accepting applications for the following full-time position: Investigator in the Department of Public Safety.

While practicing community oriented policing practices and principals the employee conducts in-depth, and complex criminal investigations. With limited supervision, enforces Coastal Carolina University rules and regulations, local, state and federal laws and statutes for the preservation of peace and protection of life and property while focused on problem solving. Serves in the capacity of a criminal investigator with the university title of Investigator.

Required Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited high school or G.E.D. equivalent. Must have at least one (1) year of law enforcement related experience to meet minimum requirements. Must be able to pass a SCCJA standardized physical abilities test. Must be able to pass a psychological exam. Position is subject to pre-employment and post-hire drug testing.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience and/or advance training in conducting in-depth criminal and sexual assault investigations preferred.

Duties Include, But Are Not Limited To

  • Conducts in-depth, complex investigations on criminal activity. Secures, preserves and compiles evidence to aid in the prosecution of criminal activity. Questions suspects and/or witnesses and takes statements. Conducts sensitive investigations for use in administrative proceedings within the University. Provides guidance and assistance to crime victims/witnesses pursuant to the South Carolina Victims’ Rights Laws and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. Uses computer hardware and software, in accordance with the law and directives, to extract information from mobile media devices.
  • Coordinates, manages, and allocates resources to effectively manage a crime scene. Responsible for interviewing suspects, victims and witnesses. Processes crime scenes and documents, collects and logs seized/recovered evidence associated with criminal investigations.
  • Makes documentation and maintains case files of all investigative activities assigned. Completes proper departmental forms and other required documentation, performs assigned follow-up investigations.
  • Attends and testifies in court as needed. Prepares case files for court, the Solicitor’s Office and obtains and executes arrest and search warrants.
  • Assist the department’s training officer in instructing patrol officers proper investigative techniques and crime scene procedures. Trains new investigators on departmental investigative procedures.

Investigator III (JA15/61123277/FTE-S01180P), full-time position with benefits. SC State Pay Grade: GEN08. Salary range: $45,300.00 (midpoint) – $61,100.00 (midpoint). Work hours vary. Weekends, holidays and special events are required. Must be flexible to meet the special scheduling needs of the university.
