This position description sets out the essential duties and responsibilities of the position, details the knowledge, abilities, skills, licenses, certifications, education, and experience necessary to be successful in the role, and lists the equipment normally operated by, scope of supervision, and usual physical demands on the incumbent.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Investigative Services Supervisor serves in the Pretrial & Investigative Services Department and reports to the Director of Pretrial & Investigative Services.

The Investigative Services Supervisor is responsible for providing support and assistance in management and coordination of Investigative Services operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The essential duties and responsibilities of the position are as follows:

  • Oversees daily operation of the Investigative Services Section.
  • Serves as liaison between judges and attorneys.
  • Addresses and resolves issues regarding matters of investigative reports.
  • Supervises staff in performance of job duties and responsibilities; prioritizes, delegates, and reviews work of assigned staff; ensures compliance with court policies, mandates, standards, and requirements.
  • Monitors and approves leave while ensuring office coverage needs are met; completes probationary and annual performance evaluations of staff; maintains responsibility for disciplinary actions of staff.
  • Provides input into the development of department policies and procedures.
  • Monitors outcomes, workloads, and trends through analysis of data and statistics; prepares reports and provides recommendations to improve operations and services to the court.
  • Participates in interviews and selection of job applicants; assists in training and orientation of new staff members.
  • Acts on behalf of the Director of Pretrial & Investigative Services as required.
  • Obtain and maintain Practitioner Certification through the Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS).
  • Participates in training opportunities, court activities, projects, and committees as requested or required.
  • Completes other duties and responsibilities as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:
  • Knowledge of: criminal justice system; chemical dependency; social work; Ohio Revised Code as it pertains to probation functions; presentence investigation; victim impact statement; community social service agencies and resources; universal precautions for control of blood-borne pathogens; community control policies and procedures.
  • Ability to: establish rapport with offenders/defendants of various social and economic backgrounds; perform under stress; work with resistant clients; establish caseload priorities; physically make an arrest; participate in a physical examination that includes an agility evaluation.
  • Skill in: organization; interviewing; completing reports; proper grammar and sentence structure, operation of computer; analyzing data and preparing behavior modification programs; listening.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:

The position requires an appropriate combination of formal education, additional training and courses, and work experience. There is not an exact level or mixture of these elements to indicate one will necessarily be successful in, or qualify for, the position.

For example purposes only, an acceptable combination of qualifications for the position would be a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, sociology, social work, psychology, corrections, or related field, and five years of experience in a court environment, including supervision of staff.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

A valid state of Ohio motor vehicle operator’s license is preferred in order to carry out job-related essential functions. Private insurance is required if private vehicle is employed for job-related functions.

SCOPE OF SUPERVISION:

The position supervises assigned personnel and carries out managerial duties in accordance with the operation’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, directing work, and appraising performance.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED:

Vehicle, computer, calculator, copier, fax, telephone, and other general office equipment.
