The Inventory Control Specialist (Stockkeeper)
is responsible for the receipt, storage and issuance of supplies, parts and materials to all Metro Transit departments and facilities. Follows established methods and procedures in requisitioning, receipt, issuance, storage and inventory of materials, supplies and equipment to maintain the integrity of Metro Transit's inventory system. The nature of work may involve considerable physical effort and heavy lifting. Candidates must have the ability to workdays, evenings, nights and weekends and at multiple locations as the work shift and location is bid on a seniority basis. This position requires two years working with the following:

  • Mechanical, electro-mechanical, computer parts inventory or related products (e.g., car/truck parts, medical devices, and circuit boards).
  • Using an inventory management program/system that allows the employee to manipulate the inventory by identifying, locating, receiving, issuing/selling, etc. Examples include SAP, Maximo, Infor, etc.
  • Directly working with customers in either retail or wholesale environment.
Recruitment Type: This posting will establish a six-month candidate pool for present and future openings.
  • Maintains an organized and efficient warehouse/stockroom by tracking and counting inventory, picking, putting away and storing stock, labeling product and storage locations and storing hazardous material and waste and safely operating MHE; maintains work area in accordance with required safety standards.
  • Ensures material received is accurately inventoried against packing lists or labels, receives IAW with hazardous materials law, and identifies high priority deliveries for appropriate action.
  • Ensures materials are properly issued by using interface tools such as radio frequency scanners, reference parts manuals, and vendor websites; references material management system(s), identifies inventory levels and any special handling requirements.
  • Safely operates various hand or automatic equipment used in the labeling, transport and storage of supplies; may operate a box truck in connection with the pick-up or delivery of materials and supplies.
  • Performs other inventory related duties as assigned.
A high school diploma or GED AND you must have at least two years verifiable work experience with experience in eachof the following areas:
  • Mechanical, electro-mechanical, computer parts inventory or related products (e.g., car/truck parts, medical devices, and circuit boards).
  • Using an inventory management program, in the last 10 years, where they were able to manipulate the inventory by identifying, locating, receiving, issuing/selling, etc. Examples include SAP, Maximo, Infor, etc.
  • Directly working with customers in either retail or wholesale environment.


License Requirements:

  • Valid driver's license and good driving record.
  • Forklift certification must be obtained within six (6) months of hire/transfer and be maintained
Physical Requirements:
  • Lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds. May be required to lift fifty (50) pounds and may also be required to lift more than 100 pounds with assistance.

What knowledge, skills and abilities you should have within the first six (6) months on the job:

  • General knowledge of methods and practices of inventory management including ordering, receipt, storage, requisitioning, inventory and issuance of large and varied quantities of supplies, materials and equipment.
  • Ability to safely and effectively operate Metro transit vehicles and equipment including, trucks, forklifts, hand trucks, electric carts, chain hoists and other material handling equipment.
  • Ability to perform duties under general supervision, work effectively as a part of a team, read, comprehend and effectively reference parts manuals, follow detailed instructions, keep accurate records, and fill requisitions timely and accurately.
  • Ability to employ positive customer service skills including punctuality, neat and clean appearance and execute departmental procedures with accuracy and courtesy.
  • Ability to work various shifts (days, evenings, nights and weekends) and locations. All shifts and locations are bid by seniority.
  • Ability toreadand interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively utilize an inventory management program as well as basic utilization of Microsoft Office suite, electronic parts manuals and other related electronic systems.
  • Ability to maintain attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
  • Ability to promote an equitable, positive and respectful work environment that values culture and diversity among all employees.

What your work environment would be:
Work is performed in a warehouse setting. Position requires working with automated inventory management system. This position may require working in wet or hot, humid non-weather conditions, with fumes, airborne particles or toxic chemicals, near moving parts or equipment, and in high precarious places.

Note: Internal ATU employees who successfully complete all steps of the process will be awarded the position per our ATU Bargaining Agreement.

Once you have successfully completed the steps above, then:

If you are new to the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (safety sensitive positions only), and a background check which verifies education, employment, and criminal history. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the job. If you have a criminal conviction, you do not automatically fail. The Metropolitan Council considers felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis, based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.

If you are already an employee of the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (if moving from a non-safety sensitive position to a safety sensitive position) and criminal background check if the job you're applying for is safety sensitive, is a supervisory or management job, is in the Finance, Information Services, Audit, or Human Resources departments, or has access to financial records, files/databases, cash, vouchers or transit fare cards. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the position.
