Job summary

UNFI in Urbana, IL is seeking an Inventory Control specialist to track all inventory within our distribution centers, research discrepancies, and ensure proper product location across receiving, put-away, and picking processes. The role supports efficient operations, reduces stockouts, and improves inventory accuracy.

You will perform cycle counts, monitor damages and expiration dates, and alert leadership to safety concerns while aligning with HACCP and SQF policies.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of inventory tracking and reporting methods.
  • Experience with cycle counts and reconciling discrepancies.
  • Ability to operate powered industrial equipment if licensed.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor product velocity and track losses and in-house damages.
  • Research inventory adjustments and maintain high service levels (low out of stock).
  • Initiate date checks and periodic cycle counts (3 months in grocery) and quality checks.
  • Research mis-slots and verify pick slots and back stock.
  • Process return-to-vendor requests.
  • Perform basic slotting and alert management to safety concerns.
  • Track expiration dates, especially cooler/freezer items.
  • Track salvaged product and food bank activities.
  • Follow HACCP and SQF policies; work with location-specific guidelines.

Job description

What does it mean to be a part of the Inventory Control team?

Our Inventory team is responsible for tracking all inventory within our distribution centers. This includes maintaining accurate records and researching any discrepancies with the product. It is imperative to understand the layout of the warehouse to ensure the proper location of the product. Researching any damages/adjustments of product, tracking expiration dates, and alert management of any potential safety concerns that may arise. Within this department, you will ensure proper handling of damaged and/or spoiled merchandise, pulling and processing salvaged product, review and analyze inventory reports to identify trends, and work directly with various departments and local operations leadership to provide recommendations.

Schedule
  • Monday - Friday, 4:00am - 12:30pm
Essential Functions And Basic Duties
  • Monitors product velocity and tracks lost sales and in-house damages
  • Researches inventory adjustments and maintain high service levels (low out of stock)
  • Initiates date checks, periodic cycle counts ( 3 months in grocery and repack and every 3-4 weeks in cooler/freezer) as well as quality checks
  • Researches mis-slots and quality issues, verifies pick slots and back stock verification
  • Processes return to vendor requests
  • Basic slotting
  • Alerts management of potential safety problems or violations.
  • Tracks expiration dates (particularly cooler/freezer items)
  • Tracks food bank and salvaged product
  • Perform duties in accordance with Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) and Safe Quality Food (SQF) policies and procedures, as appropriate for location
  • Good judgment is required for this position as there may be times when direct supervision may not be immediately available
Qualifications
  • Strong knowledge of applicable Bakco functions and RF systems
  • Understanding of all paperwork and reporting methods related to tracking inventory
  • Capability of being licensed in operating powered industrial equipment

  • Strong communications skills; both written and oral applications
  • Strong interpersonal skills; must be motivated and take initiative
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Ability to be detail oriented and manage multiple tasks

Compensation

UNFI anticipates paying the above-referenced pay rate (or within the above-referenced pay range) for this position. Actual Pay, where applicable, will depend on a number of factors, including, but not limited to, education, experience, training, and any requirements under applicable collective bargaining agreements.
