Job summary

Children’s Mercy KC is recruiting for an Introductory Care Assistant who will receive clinical skills training to become a CNA on inpatient units or the Emergency Department. Training occurs Monday–Friday during the day, followed by a transition to 12-hour night shifts (7p–7a).

The program emphasizes caring for pediatric patients and families within a welcoming workplace. Immunization records may be required, and attendance during training is critical for success.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent / On-the-Job Training.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking and good time management skills.
  • Strong desire to care for pediatric patients and families.
  • Must be available for 8, 10, or 12 hour day shifts M-F during the training.
  • Excellent attendance during the program is critical to success.
  • Basic Life Support certification Required Upon Hire (will be offered as part of the training).
  • Must be able to work 12 hour night shifts after training.
  • Employees who are on current corrective counseling are not eligible.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of supportive technical and clinical tasks.
  • Manages time effectively and prioritizes work to be accomplished.
  • Recognizes pertinent changes in patient condition and communicates them to the supervising RN or provider.
  • Records observations and patient care interventions accurately in the EHR and forms.
  • Works effectively with other departments (e.g. Lab, Social Work, Radiology).

We are seeking candidates who are interested in gaining the clinical skills training needed to become a successful Care Assistant (similar to a CNA) on one of our inpatient medical/surgical units or Emergency Departments. Candidates must be available M-F during the day for the training and then transition to working 12 hour night shifts ( 7p-7a) after the training.

Overview

Care Assistants provide basic, uncomplicated patient care and assist with unit/department operations under the supervision of RN, Charge Nurse, Nurse Manager or Resource Manager assigned to supervise the Care Assistant and in accordance with this job description. Those in the Introductory Care Assistant position are employed by Children's Mercy while they complete a certified nursing assistant (CNA) program.

  • Works effectively with other departments (e.g. Lab, Social Work, Radiology, etc.).

Starting Pay

Our pay ranges are market competitive. The pay range for this job begins at $17.67/hr, but your offer will be determined based on your education and experience.
