Job summary

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is seeking an Interventional Technologist II to assist in vascular and neuro interventional procedures. You will operate CT for IR cases, participate in patient care and education, and support imaging quality and safety initiatives.

The role requires ARRT registration, MD/VA licensure, BLS and ACLS at designated sites, and a minimum of two years in IR settings. This is a full-time position in the DC area with a focus on patient-centered care.

Qualifications

  • MD or VA state radiologic technologist license required upon hire.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required at designated sites.
  • Minimum 2 years of interventional radiology experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and specialized vascular/non-vascular and neuro interventional procedures under supervision.

  • Maintain a safe, clean work environment and ensure patient safety and comfort.
  • Document care activities in EHR and distribute final images to PACS.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities
  • Under general supervision performs routine and specialized vascular non-vascular and/or neuro interventional procedures.
  • Demonstrates basic clinical competency in vascular, non-vascular, and/or neurointerventional procedures across all locations and patient populations. Selects appropriate technical factors based on individual patient needs and demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care. Administers contrast media in accordance with facility policies. Participates in and/or performs procedure-related patient care activities and physiologic monitoring under the direction of a physician. Utilizes sterile technique and functions as either a scrub or circulating technologist, as needed.
  • Operates CT scanners for interventional radiology (IR) procedures and performs diagnostic CT scans, when applicable.
  • Participates in departmental and organizational performance improvement initiatives designed to enhance workflows, patient experience, quality, safety, and operational efficiency. Actively participates in student and employee training and educational activities.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and prepared work environment, including cleaning and preparing patient rooms. Maintains supplies and inventory within the assigned area.
  • Verifies physician orders, patient preparation, and the reason for the examination to ensure the appropriate scanning protocol is selected. Communicates effectively with patients to obtain medical histories, answer questions, and explain procedures to promote patient understanding and comfort. Provides patient education and support, including preparing patients for procedures and addressing physical and psychological needs. Escalates concerns through appropriate channels when necessary.
  • Ensures the proper maintenance and operation of equipment by performing quality control activities and promptly reporting equipment or environmental issues.
  • Prioritizes patient flow and coordinates care through consistent and effective communication with patients, families, and the healthcare team. Documents patient care activities in electronic health record systems and distributes final images to the PACS system in a timely manner for interpretation.
  • Consistently acts and communicates professionally, embodying the organization's SPIRIT values and fostering a respectful and supportive environment for patients, families, and colleagues. Adheres to the ARRT Standards of Ethics.
  • Adheres to departmental policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards while maintaining compliance with federal, state, professional, and accreditation requirements.
  • Follows direction from leadership, ensuring adherence to established protocols, maintaining patient flow, and seeking clarification when necessary.
Minimal Qualifications
Education
  • Associate's degree required; or
  • Certificate in Radiologic Technology (awarded before January 1, 2015) from a program accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE), the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), or the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) required.
Experience
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in an interventional radiology environment, such as cardiac catheterization, vascular interventional, or neurointerventional services, required.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) required upon hire. Advanced certification in Cardiovascular Interventional (CV), Cardiac Interventional (CI), or Vascular Interventional (VI) Radiography is required for individuals hired on or after July 1, 2017.
  • ARRT Radiography Certification [ARRT(R)] and Computed Tomography Certification [ARRT(CT)], or Computed Tomography Certification through the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB), preferred.
  • Licensed Radiologic Technologist in the applicable state (Maryland or Virginia) required upon hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required upon hire.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required at designated sites.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills with the ability to address moderately complex issues.
  • Standard methods, guidelines, and procedures are generally available to support decision-making.
  • Ability to work independently, organize work, and establish priorities while following established procedures and instructions.
  • Ability to effectively explain and interpret information to internal customers and colleagues throughout the organization.
