Job summary

Akron Children’s Hospital is seeking an experienced Interventional Radiology Registered Nurse to coordinate and deliver nursing care for IR procedures. The role requires independent clinical judgment in a high-acuity setting, with collaboration across an interdisciplinary team.

Responsibilities include pre-/intra-/post-procedure care, patient education, airway and hemodynamic management, and real-time case prioritization.

Qualifications

  • BSN required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Ohio RN licensure required.
  • BLS and PALS certifications required; other nursing certifications preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of procedural, critical care, or acute care nursing experience; interventional radiology, emergency, ICU, or procedural nursing experience preferred.
  • No supervisory experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Delivers high-quality nursing care across pre-, intra-, and post-procedure phases using the nursing process.
  • Performs comprehensive pre-procedure assessments and coordinates care and education.
  • Functions in circulating, monitoring, and procedural support roles during IR cases.
  • Manages airway, hemodynamic status, and patient stabilization; escalates as needed.
  • Cares for high-acuity and medically complex patients including trauma and active bleeding.
  • Coordinates patient flow, scheduling, and real-time prioritization of cases.
  • Demonstrates advanced assessment skills and rapid response to condition changes.
  • Collaborates with providers and interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe care delivery.
  • Participates in quality improvement, program development, data tracking, and education.
  • Participates in on-call coverage as required.

Summary:

Assumes accountability and overarching responsibility for the coordination and delivery of nursing care for patients across the continuum of interventional radiology procedures. Provides advanced clinical care in a high-acuity, dynamic procedural environment requiring independent clinical judgment, rapid decision-making, and coordination of care among interdisciplinary team members.

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Delivers high-quality nursing care to patients and families using the nursing process across pre-, intra-, and post-procedure phases, anticipating the needs of patients, families, providers, and care team members.
  • 2. Performs comprehensive pre-procedure assessments and ensures patient readiness for interventional radiology procedures, including coordination of care, patient education, and procedural preparation.
  • 3. Functions in procedural roles including circulating, monitoring, and procedural support during interventional radiology cases.
  • 4. Provides independent clinical management of airway, hemodynamic status, and patient stabilization during procedures, escalating care as needed.
  • 5. Cares for high-acuity and medically complex patients, including trauma, active bleeding, and emergent procedural needs.
  • 6. Integrates clinical and operational responsibilities, including patient flow, scheduling coordination, and real-time prioritization of cases.
  • 7. Demonstrates advanced assessment skills and responds rapidly to patient condition changes in a fast-paced procedural environment.
  • 8. Collaborates with providers and interdisciplinary team members to ensure safe, effective, and efficient patient care delivery.
  • 9. Participates in departmental initiatives such as quality improvement, program development, data tracking, and education.
  • 10. Participates in on-call responsibilities as required to support procedural coverage.

Technical Expertise

  1. 1. Proficiency with equipment, supplies, and sterile technique used in interventional radiology procedures is required.
  2. 2. Advanced knowledge of procedural nursing care, including patient assessment, sedation monitoring, and emergency response, is required.
  3. 3. Ability to manage airway and hemodynamic stability in procedural settings is required.
  4. 4. Experience working collaboratively with providers and interdisciplinary teams is required.
  5. 5. Experience working with all levels within an organization is preferred.
  6. 6. Proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required; EMR experience (e.g., Epic) is preferred.

Education and Experience

  1. 1. Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is required. Master's degree preferred.
  2. 2. Licensure: Current Registered Nurse licensure for the State of Ohio is required.
  3. 3. Certification: BLS and PALS Certification required. Nursing certification (e.g., certified pediatric nurse, certified radiology nurse) preferred.
  4. 4. Years of relevant experience: Minimum of two (2) years of nursing experience in a procedural, critical care, or acute care setting is required. Interventional radiology, emergency, ICU, or procedural nursing experience is preferred.
  5. 5. Years of supervisory experience: None
