Job summary

Piedmont Global in Philadelphia, PA, is expanding its network of freelance interpreters to provide high-quality consecutive and simultaneous interpretation services in educational and medical contexts across on-site (OSI), video remote (VRI), and over-the-phone (OPI) settings.

These are 1099 Independent Contractor opportunities. Assignments vary by client needs, interpreter qualifications, location, and availability, with opportunities to work across diverse communities.

Responsibilities

• Serve as an interpreter between individuals with diverse voices and accents.

Piedmont Global is a Strategic Globalization Organization (SGO) helping organizations communicate with intelligence, operate with cultural fluency, and connect effectively across communities and markets, and is expanding its network of professional freelance interpreters to provide high-quality consecutive and simultaneous educational and medical interpretation services in the Philadelphia, PA area across on-site (OSI), video remote (VRI), and over-the-phone (OPI) settings.

These are 1099 Independent Contractor opportunities. Assignments may be offered on-site, via VRI, or over the phone based on client needs, interpreter qualifications, location, and availability

Interpreter Functions

• Serve as an interpreter between individuals with diverse voices, accents, speaking tempos, and personalities.
• Provide clear and accurate interpretations of verbal communication without additions or omissions.
• Interpret questions, answers, statements, arguments, explanations, and other forms of verbal communication.
• Provide sight translations of documents and other written materials as needed.
• Convey the speaker's thoughts, purpose, intent, emotions, and tone from the source language into the target language, and vice versa.
• Inform relevant parties of any factors that may hinder your performance.
• Comply with applicable professional ethics and interpreting standards.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

• For Non-Medical Interpreting Assignments
• At least two years of interpreting experience, whether paid or volunteer.
• Professional proficiency in English and the target language(s).
• Two relevant professional references, or one professional reference and one relevant letter of recommendation.
• Valid government-issued identification.

For Medical Interpreting Assignments

• Completion of a recognized 40-hour medical interpreter training program or equivalent.
• At least two years of interpreting experience in a healthcare setting, whether paid or volunteer.
• Professional proficiency in English and the target language(s).
• Two relevant professional references, or one professional reference and one relevant letter of recommendation.

Remote Assignment Requirements

• For VRI and OPI assignments, interpreters should have:
• A laptop or desktop computer with at least 4 GB of RAM.
• Reliable high-speed internet access.
• A mobile phone is available as a backup device.
• A wired headset compatible with the computer or phone.
• A quiet, private workspace suitable for confidential interpreting assignments.

Preferred Qualifications

• The following are preferred but not required for all assignments:
• Degree in interpretation, linguistics, languages, or a related field.
• Professional interpreter training of 40 hours or more. CCHI,NBCMI
• Relevant interpreting certifications or credentials.
• Previous language assessment or proficiency testing.
• Candidates are encouraged to provide copies of applicable certifications, training certificates, diplomas, or language assessment results.
