Job summary

Children’s Nebraska is seeking an on-site Medical Interpreter to support non-English speaking patients and families during clinical encounters. You will work with physicians, nurses, and staff to ensure clear communication and culturally respectful interactions.

The role requires fluency in English and Spanish, medical terminology knowledge, and prior healthcare interpreting experience or training. The position emphasizes teamwork, accuracy, and ongoing staff education to improve patient care.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred in languages, communication, or health care field.
  • Minimum 6 months experience in health care settings and/or interpreting.
  • Formal medical interpreter training preferred.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish with high proficiency (ALTA score 9 or higher).

  • Interprets on-site for non-English speaking patients and families during encounters with physicians, nurses, and staff.
  • Displays cultural sensitivity, awareness and respect to all parties to establish trust.
  • Prioritizes requests appropriately.
  • Documents encounters (admission, discharge, consents, clinic appointments) manually or electronically.
  • Translates basic written discharge instructions as appropriate.
  • Interprets by phone for test results, scheduling, triage calls, or pre-op instructions.
  • Coordinates with supervisor or scheduler regarding communication and scheduling needs.
  • Regular attendance at work is essential.
  • Performs physical requirements as described in the Physical Requirements section.
  • Educates staff and parents about the role of interpreters through formal and informal training.

Schedule:

Monday-Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm. Monday extended hours till 7pm as needed.

A Brief Overview

Provides language interpretation and translation services for the organization's non-English speaking patients, family members, staff and physicians.


Essential Functions


  • Interprets on-site for non-English speaking patients and families during encounters with physicians, nurses, and staff members. These encounters could include clinic visits, hospital admissions/discharges, surgeries, diagnostics, or emergency department visits.

    • Displays cultural sensitivity, awareness and respect to all parties involved that makes possible conditions of mutual trust.

    • Prioritizes requests appropriately.

    • Documents encounters (admission, discharge, consents, clinic appointment) manually or electronically.



  • Translates basic written patient discharge instructions as appropriate.

  • Interprets by phone for test results, scheduling clinic appointments, nursing triage calls, pre-op instructions, or other information as needed.

  • Coordinates with supervisor or scheduler regarding specific patient/family communication and scheduling needs.

  • Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.

  • Perform physical requirements as described in the Physical Requirements section

  • Educates staff and parents as to role of interpreters, both through formal training (inpatient teaching rounds, grand rounds, nursing orientation, and departmental staff meetings), and informal continuous teaching opportunities.


Education Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university related to languages, communication, or health care field Preferred


Experience Qualifications


  • Equivalent work experience may substitute for education. Required and

  • Minimum 6 months experience or training in a health care setting and/or in interpreting Required and

  • Formal medical interpreter training Preferred


Skills And Abilities


  • Fluency in speaking, reading, and writing English and language pair. (High proficiency)

  • Ability to interact with a variety of families and health care professionals. (High proficiency)

  • Mastery of medical and colloquial terminology in both languages. (High proficiency)

  • Skill in typing and computer word processing. (Medium proficiency)

  • Ability to respond to a variety of demands in a professional manner, including prioritizing multiple requests. (High proficiency)

  • Spanish proficiency as tested by ALTA, score 9 or higher (High proficiency)


Licenses and Certifications


  • Current and valid certifications as a Certified Medical Interpreter or Certified Healthcare Interpreter Preferred
