Job description

Summary:
Under general supervision of the Manager Interpreter Services & Information Desk or designee and in accordance with established policies and procedures, the Medical Interpreter provides both oral and written foreign language interpretation services to non-English speaking patients and employees. Explains hospital policies and procedures and provides assistance to patients with limited English proficiency. All essential functions reflect the age-specific needs of patients. Sign Language Interpreters are also provided for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Patients and their families.

Responsibilities:
Provides oral and written interpretation services in foreign languages and Sign Language for Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients.
Interprets questions, responses, and instructions between medical staff and patients, including technical terms, in person or by telephone.
Interviews patients to complete required forms.
Schedules and directs patients to appointments via telephone or physical escort when necessary.
Assists hospital staff by explaining billing systems, community services, and interpreting paperwork.
Interprets cultural beliefs and provides communication support for patients and staff.
Facilitates communication with outside institutions and agencies, including medical information exchange with overseas providers.
Provides cultural training to hospital personnel and facilitates effective communication to reduce patient anxiety.
Translates medical documents and information accurately for staff, patients, and families.
Records and maintains documentation, logs, and statistical data.
Ensures compliance with quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control policies.
Performs related duties such as answering phones and data entry.

Other information:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge and skills to care for patients considering aging, development, and cultural patterns.
Associate Degree in science or human services or equivalent experience.
Fluency in English and target foreign language.
Medical Interpreter Training Program Certificate required.
Proficiency in Medical Terminology in both languages.
Interpersonal and communication skills for dealing with diverse, often emotional situations.
Ability to train and support student interpreters and act as a liaison for educational programs.
Sensitivity and knowledge of cultural and ethnic differences in medical settings.
Sign Language interpreters require certification or license.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum 1-2 years of formal medical interpreting experience.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Works in a typical office and patient care environment.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None.
