Qualifications

Responsibilities

Provide interpreting and transliterating services for hearing impaired students.
Uphold school rules, instructions, and regulations; follow Board policy and state rules.
Assist in evaluating the appropriate method of interpreting for mainstream classes.
Assist in classroom routines and guide students in completing work.
Coordinate tutoring or follow-up sessions for additional instruction.
Liaise between case managers and regular classroom teachers regarding student activities.
Interpret for hearing impaired individuals in school programs and events.
Refer questions concerning hearing impaired students to the appropriate case manager.

New Hire Experience:

1% of the base hourly rate granted for each year of verified like experience (within ten years) beyond the requirement, up to aten-year maximum

Job Summary:

To provide interpreting and transliterating services for hearing impaired students.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide interpreting and transliterating services for assigned hearing impaired student
Uphold and enforce school rules, administration instructions and regulations, Board policy and state regulations
Assist in the evaluation, in conjunction with the student’s case manager, for the appropriate method of interpreting for hearing impaired students in mainstream classes
Assist in normal classroom routines and procedures by clarifying concepts, reviewing lessons assigned and actively guiding students in the completion of required work
Coordinate tutoring or follow-up sessions with students for additional instruction
Serve as a liaison between the student’s case manager and regular classroom teachers in regard to student’s activities
Interpret for hearing impaired individuals involved in the Mesa Public Schools Program (i.e. teachers, aides, parents, etc.)
Refer questions concerning hearing impaired studentsby regular education personnel to the appropriate case manager
Interpret at special activities (i.e. captioned films, assemblies, etc.)
Continue professional growth as an educational interpreter
Regular and on-time attendance required
Perform other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
Perform all other duties as may be assigned by the Hearing Impaired Program Regional Director
Assists with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools

Required Qualifications:

High School education
Associate’s Degree or 60+ college credit hours required at time of hire OR the ability to pass the ParaPro Test provided by the district free of charge
Valid Arizona IVP fingerprint clearance card
Meet minimum Arizona Department of Education standards of EIPA 3.5-3.9 or NAD 3
Valid certificate if Interpretation (CI) and/or Certificate of Transliteration (CT) from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)
Working knowledge and experience with sign to voice and voice to sign interpreting proficiency in at least one sign communication system such as American Sign Language (ASL) or Oral interpreting
Working knowledge and experience with the RID Code of Ethics as implemented for educational interpreters; professional development plan

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

Frequently present in classrooms, resource rooms, assemblies, and special education settings
Regular interaction with students who are deaf or hard of hearing, general education teachers, special education staff, and school administrators
Might interpret during group work, one-on-one tutoring, field trips, and school events
High level of finger, hand, and arm movement is essential for fluent and expressive sign language interpretation.
Strong vision (corrected if needed) to see and respond to signing from a distance
Ability to sit or stand for long periods while maintaining physical expressiveness
