Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide interpreting and transliterating services for hearing impaired students.
  • Uphold school rules, instructions, and regulations; follow Board policy and state rules.
  • Assist in evaluating the appropriate method of interpreting for mainstream classes.
  • Assist in classroom routines and guide students in completing work.
  • Coordinate tutoring or follow-up sessions for additional instruction.
  • Liaise between case managers and regular classroom teachers regarding student activities.
  • Interpret for hearing impaired individuals in school programs and events.
  • Refer questions concerning hearing impaired students to the appropriate case manager.
  • Interpret during special activities (films, assemblies).
  • Pursue ongoing professional growth as an educational interpreter.

$26.48

B26, 9.25 months

Available annually

New Hire Experience:

1% of the base hourly rate granted for each year of verified like experience (within ten years) beyond the requirement, up to aten-year maximum

Job Summary:

To provide interpreting and transliterating services for hearing impaired students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide interpreting and transliterating services for assigned hearing impaired student
  • Uphold and enforce school rules, administration instructions and regulations, Board policy and state regulations
  • Assist in the evaluation, in conjunction with the student’s case manager, for the appropriate method of interpreting for hearing impaired students in mainstream classes
  • Assist in normal classroom routines and procedures by clarifying concepts, reviewing lessons assigned and actively guiding students in the completion of required work
  • Coordinate tutoring or follow-up sessions with students for additional instruction
  • Serve as a liaison between the student’s case manager and regular classroom teachers in regard to student’s activities
  • Interpret for hearing impaired individuals involved in the Mesa Public Schools Program (i.e. teachers, aides, parents, etc.)
  • Refer questions concerning hearing impaired studentsby regular education personnel to the appropriate case manager
  • Interpret at special activities (i.e. captioned films, assemblies, etc.)
  • Continue professional growth as an educational interpreter
  • Regular and on-time attendance required
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
  • Perform all other duties as may be assigned by the Hearing Impaired Program Regional Director
  • Assists with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools

Required Qualifications:

  • High School education
  • Associate’s Degree or 60+ college credit hours required at time of hire OR the ability to pass the ParaPro Test provided by the district free of charge
  • Valid Arizona IVP fingerprint clearance card
  • Meet minimum Arizona Department of Education standards of EIPA 3.5-3.9 or NAD 3
  • Valid certificate if Interpretation (CI) and/or Certificate of Transliteration (CT) from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)
  • Working knowledge and experience with sign to voice and voice to sign interpreting proficiency in at least one sign communication system such as American Sign Language (ASL) or Oral interpreting
  • Working knowledge and experience with the RID Code of Ethics as implemented for educational interpreters; professional development plan

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently present in classrooms, resource rooms, assemblies, and special education settings
  • Regular interaction with students who are deaf or hard of hearing, general education teachers, special education staff, and school administrators
  • Might interpret during group work, one-on-one tutoring, field trips, and school events
  • High level of finger, hand, and arm movement is essential for fluent and expressive sign language interpretation.
  • Strong vision (corrected if needed) to see and respond to signing from a distance
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods while maintaining physical expressiveness
