Job summary

Mesa Public Schools is seeking an Interpreter I for specialized student services in Mesa. You will provide interpreting and transliterating services for hearing-impaired students in classrooms and during activities.

The role requires high school education, an Arizona IVP clearance, and an EIPA score, with annual performance pay and comprehensive benefits including retirement and health insurance. This is a full-time position with a 9.25 month academic calendar and a base hourly rate of $21.01;

Qualifications

  • High School education or equivalent.
  • Valid Arizona IVP fingerprint clearance card.
  • Minimum passing score of 3.5 or better on the EIPA.
  • Knowledge of RID Code of Ethics for educational interpreters.
  • Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide interpreting and transliterating services for assigned hearing impaired student.
  • Uphold and enforce school rules, administration instructions and regulations, Board policy and state regulations.
  • Assist in the evaluation, in conjunction with the student’s case manager, for the appropriate method of interpreting for hearing impaired students in mainstream classes.
  • Assist in normal classroom routines and procedures by clarifying concepts, reviewing lessons assigned and actively guiding students in the completion of required work.
  • Coordinate tutoring or follow‑up sessions with students for additional instruction.
  • Serve as a liaison between the student’s case manager and regular classroom teachers in regard to student’s activities.
  • Interpret for hearing impaired individuals involved in the Mesa Public Schools Program (i.e., teachers, aides, parents, etc.).
  • Refer questions concerning hearing impaired students by regular education personnel to the appropriate case manager.
  • Interpret at special activities (i.e., captioned films, assemblies, etc.).
  • Continue professional growth as an educational interpreter.
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  • Regular and on‑time attendance required.
  • Perform all other duties as may be assigned by the Hearing Impaired Program Regional Director.
  • Assist with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools.

Interpreter I - Specialized Student Services

Employment Type: Full-time (33.75 hours per week)

Base Hourly: $21.01

Class/Calendar: B22, 9.25 months

Performance Pay: Available annually

New Hire Experience: 1% of the base hourly rate granted for each year of verified like experience (within ten years) beyond the requirement, up to eight-year maximum

New Hire Education: 1% of the base hourly rate awarded for an AA or higher degree if not required for the position

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Ethics as implemented for educational interpreters; professional development plan
  • Citizenship, residency, or work visa required

  • Ability to adapt to the communication needs of students
  • Familiarity with the deaf culture and cultural diversity
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with district personnel and to work as a member of a team
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Frequently present in classrooms, resource rooms, assemblies, and special education settings
  • Regular interaction with students who are deaf or hard of hearing, general education teachers, special education staff, and school administrators
  • Might interpret during group work, one‑on‑one tutoring, field trips, and school events.
  • High level of finger, hand, and arm movement is essential for fluent and expressive sign language interpretation
  • Strong vision (corrected if needed) to see and respond to signing from a distance
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods while maintaining physical expressiveness
