SUMMARY
JOB DESCRIPTION

This is a para-professional position responsible for providinginterpretation for deaf and hard-of-hearing students, faculty, andstaff in a variety of settings, including classrooms, universityactivities, and when needed. Responsible for providing interpretingat all levels and for all aspects of university functions. Worksunder general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use ofinitiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Director ofDisability Services.

QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Bachelor’s degree inhuman services, rehabilitation, or a related field ispreferred.

One year of related experience is required. Experience in highereducation is preferred. National certification through the Registryof Interpreters for the Deaf or qualifications through Texas andHuman Services at the BEI Basic level or an equivalent isrequired.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  1. Provides interpreting for deaf and hard-of-hearing students,faculty, and staff in a variety of settings, including classrooms,university activities, and when needed.
  2. Evaluates communication needs of deaf and hard-of hearingconsumers and provides communication access based on thatevaluation
  3. Assists in providing captioning as needed.
  4. Follows policies and regulations regarding interpretingprocedures and code of conduct.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  1. Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, andabilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individualcan perform the essential functions of the job, with or withoutreasonable accommodation.

  1. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies andprocedures.
  2. Knowledge of professional standards and regulations in theareas of sign language and interpreting.
  3. Knowledge of deafness and deaf culture.
  4. Knowledge of signing and a clear understanding when signed to(sign-to-voice).
  5. Organizational skills in managing projects simultaneously whilemaintaining a satisfactory work product.
  6. Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  7. Ability to communicate effectively through sign language and inboth oral and written English.
  8. Ability to problem-solve a variety of situations.
  9. Ability to provide support to student development with ademonstrable concern for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
  10. Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends asnecessary.
