Job description

Job Overview

The Interpreter Deaf Co‑Op (RDSPD) will serve as a member of the educational team, interpreting for deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students and assisting teachers in classroom settings to provide equitable educational opportunities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Interpret/translate for individuals with hearing impairment in instructional settings.
  • Prepare for interpreting assignments by studying subject matter and sign language vocabulary.
  • Provide information about deafness and the role of the educational interpreter.
  • Collaborate on student/classroom information and attend educational team meetings.
  • Participate in district‑provided professional development related to educational interpreting and/or education for the deaf.
  • Assist RDSPD teachers with materials and perform clerical duties as assigned.
  • Provide lunchroom supervision and supervise student rest periods, as appropriate.

Qualification Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Associate’s Degree or higher related to interpreting or the field of deaf/hard of hearing (preferred).
  • Certificate in interpreting for the deaf issued by the Texas Division of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (BEI) or the Registry of Interpreters (RID).
  • Experience working with children (preferred).
  • Working knowledge of the Code of Ethics established by the Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf and endorsed by the Texas Division of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essentials functions.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Work is performed in classrooms, offices, workstations, and meeting rooms. Required activities include occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying items weighing less than 40 pounds. Employees regularly use hands to manipulate objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required. Work may involve prolonged or irregular hours and requires maintaining emotional control under stress.
