Job description

  • Our client is a global consumer and retail organization with a significant national presence and a growing international footprint. Continued expansion into new markets is creating additional complexity across the company’s global tax structure, compliance requirements, transfer pricing, and financial reporting.
  • The organization offers a sophisticated corporate tax environment with exposure to both established domestic operations and evolving international activities. This position will work closely with senior tax leadership as the company continues to expand globally.
  • Chicago, IL – Highly flexible hybrid schedule
  • Approximately six days per month in the office, with access to both suburban and downtown Chicago offices
  • Opportunity to work fully remote for approximately one month each year
  • Up to $140,000 base salary + 15% annual bonus
Position Overview
  • The International Tax Manager will help oversee the company's international tax responsibilities as its operations become increasingly global.
  • Reporting into senior tax leadership, this individual will have responsibility spanning U.S. international compliance, foreign-country filings, tax provision matters, transfer pricing, tax audits, indirect taxes, and international planning. The Manager will also support strategic initiatives involving international expansion, cross-border transactions, and changes to the company's global operating structure.
  • The position requires someone who can combine strong international tax technical knowledge with the ability to coordinate multiple stakeholders, manage outside advisors, develop junior professionals, and translate complex tax issues into practical recommendations for the business.
Key Responsibilities
  • Take ownership of recurring international tax obligations and establish an organized framework for completing filings across multiple jurisdictions
  • Review U.S. reporting associated with foreign entities, activities, and investments, including Forms 5471, 8858, 1118, and applicable FATCA requirements
  • Coordinate statutory income-tax filings outside the United States and work with local advisors to address jurisdiction-specific requirements
  • Evaluate international components of the company's quarterly and annual income-tax provision under ASC 740
  • Analyze GILTI, FDII, foreign tax credits, and other cross-border items affecting the company's effective tax position
  • Develop support for international reserves and valuation considerations and maintain appropriate technical documentation
  • Maintain the company's transfer-pricing framework as business activity expands across legal entities and jurisdictions
  • Review intercompany arrangements to ensure pricing practices and contractual terms remain aligned with established tax policies
  • Coordinate transfer-pricing studies, country-by-country reporting, and related documentation with external specialists
  • Serve as a key internal resource during examinations involving cross-border or international tax matters
  • Research questions raised by taxing authorities and assemble the factual and technical support necessary to substantiate filing positions
  • Assess tax authority correspondence and coordinate appropriate responses with internal stakeholders and outside advisors
  • Model the tax consequences of potential international expansion initiatives and changes to the company's global operating structure
  • Evaluate cross-border transactions and provide management with analysis of alternative approaches and potential tax implications
  • Support tax diligence and structuring considerations associated with international acquisitions and other strategic transactions
  • Work with business leaders on tax considerations involving global supply chains and the movement of products, services, or capital between jurisdictions
  • Assist with VAT and other non-U.S. indirect tax matters, including compliance, accounting, planning, and audit activity
  • Identify emerging international tax developments and determine which changes could materially affect the company's operations or reporting
  • Evaluate tax risk across foreign operations and help establish appropriate processes for monitoring and mitigating identified exposures
  • Maintain SOX-related controls supporting international tax calculations, filings, and financial reporting
  • Coordinate extensively with finance, accounting, legal, external advisors, and other stakeholders on matters involving international taxation
  • Provide technical guidance and development to other members of the tax team
  • Identify opportunities to automate, standardize, or otherwise improve international tax processes as the global footprint expands
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline required
  • Approximately 5–8+ years of progressively responsible international tax experience
  • Background may come from Big 4/public accounting, a multinational corporate tax department, or a combination of both
  • Strong technical foundation in U.S. international taxation and the reporting requirements associated with foreign operations
  • Experience preparing or reviewing U.S. international information returns and related calculations
  • Working knowledge of GILTI, FDII, foreign tax credits, and other major components of the U.S. international tax regime
  • Solid understanding of ASC 740 with experience addressing international elements of an income-tax provision
  • Experience with transfer-pricing policies, documentation, intercompany arrangements, or related compliance requirements
  • Exposure to foreign-country income-tax compliance and coordination with local-country advisors
  • Familiarity with VAT or other international indirect taxes is beneficial
  • Experience supporting tax examinations, responding to information requests, or addressing tax authority inquiries is valuable
  • Ability to evaluate the tax consequences of cross-border transactions and changes to international business structures
  • Exposure to international expansion, global supply-chain planning, or cross-border M&A is preferred
  • Comfortable operating within a SOX-controlled public-company environment
  • Experience using tax compliance and reporting technology
  • Strong research and analytical capabilities with the ability to develop supportable conclusions on complex international tax matters
