Internal Medicine Veterinary Assistant (PM/BS)

Are you an experienced Veterinary Assistant who enjoys learning, staying busy, and being an important part of a collaborative medical team?

Pieper Memorial Veterinary Center in Middletown, CT is looking for a Veterinary Assistant to join our Internal Medicine team. Internal Medicine is a fast-paced specialty where no two days are quite the same. Our team cares for patients with a wide variety of complex medical conditions, and our assistants play an important role in keeping patients comfortable, owners informed, and the department running smoothly.

You do not need previous Internal Medicine or specialty experience. We are looking for someone with a strong foundation in veterinary patient care who takes initiative, pays attention to detail, communicates comfortably with clients and coworkers, and is excited to learn.

Our vision is simple: to make the community—and the animals and people in it—happier and healthier.

What to Expect:
  • A Chance to Learn Specialty Medicine: You’ll work alongside Internal Medicine specialists, technicians, and other experienced team members while becoming familiar with a wide range of diseases, medications, diagnostics, and specialty procedures. There is always something new to learn.
  • An Important Role on the Team: Our assistants help keep the department organized and moving throughout the day. This includes anticipating patient and team needs, helping with patient care and restraint, communicating with owners, keeping treatment areas organized, and supporting technicians and doctors wherever needed.
  • Growth and Continuing Education: We want to retain and develop our team members. You can expect in-house continuing education, hands‑on learning, and mentorship to help you build your knowledge and advance your career.
  • Career Advancement: We pride ourselves on recognizing strong work ethic, initiative, and talent and promoting from within whenever possible.
  • Environment of Collaboration: Internal Medicine works closely with many other departments throughout the hospital, including Neurology, Oncology, Surgery, Emergency, Exotics, and Primary Care. Our doctors, technicians, assistants, and client care teams work together to provide excellent patient care.
  • Environment of Belonging: With many different specialties and career paths available, there are plenty of opportunities to discover what interests you and continue to grow. We also promote an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome.
About You:

We strongly believe veterinary medicine is a team sport, and our ideal candidate feels the same.

This position is a great fit for someone who is proactive and doesn’t need to be asked to do every next task. You notice when a patient needs something, when a room needs to be turned over, or when a teammate could use an extra set of hands—and you step in.

You should be comfortable handling and restraining dogs and cats, providing basic patient care, and interacting with pet owners. Because Internal Medicine involves patients with complicated medical histories and often multiple medications, you should also be willing to learn veterinary terminology and become comfortable recognizing and correctly pronouncing medication names. We don’t expect you to know everything when you start—we do expect curiosity and a willingness to learn.

Clear communication is especially important. Our assistants frequently interact with owners, help gather information, provide updates or instructions as directed by the medical team, and help make what can be a stressful veterinary visit feel organized and supportive.

Experience with EzyVet and SmartFlow is a plus but not required. We highly value input from every member of the team, so we encourage you to ask questions, speak up, and participate in patient care.

Anticipated Schedule:

This is a full-time position: 4 days a week / 10-hour shifts. Some weekends and holidays will be required.

Typical schedule will be Tuesday thru Friday 8a-6p or 9a-7p.

This position will be scheduled at both our Middletown and Berlin Street locations.

Compensation:

Starting at $19.50-$22.00/hour dependent upon experience.

What's in it for you?
  • Competitive paid time off & holidays
  • Career Growth & Training Opportunities
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Mental Health Focused Services
  • 401(k) plan with strong employer match
  • Up to 75% employee pet care discount
  • Annual uniform allowance

We know it’s not always easy to make a move. We treat all interviews as confidential, and if a casual conversation is more your style, we can do that too. We genuinely love what we do and the people we work with!

Requirements:
  • Previous Veterinary Assistant experience required.
