Job summary

JJ Food Service Limited seeks an Assistant Management Accountant to join its Finance team. The role offers a path toward Management Accountant with responsibility for month-end accounting, reconciliations and financial reporting.

You will work closely with the Finance Manager, contribute to budgeting and forecasting, VAT compliance, and support the external audit process. AAT/ACCA/CIMA pathway is encouraged.

Qualifications

• Strong numerical and analytical skills with attention to detail.
• Experience with month-end processes and reconciliations.
• Proficient with Excel including lookups, SUMIFS and PivotTables.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and post month-end journals, including accruals, prepayments, depreciation and intercompany transactions.
• Take ownership of assigned areas of the monthly management accounts.
• Prepare and maintain accurate balance sheet reconciliations, resolving outstanding items.
• Review financial information and investigate discrepancies and variances.
• Support daily bank reconciliations and review cash and other control accounts.
• Assist with maintaining the fixed asset register including additions, disposals and depreciation.
• Prepare regular financial reports and ad-hoc analysis for the Finance Manager and senior team.
• Support budgets and forecasts and analyze performance against them.
• Assist with VAT returns and other statutory requirements.
• Prepare schedules for annual accounts and external audit.
• Collaborate with branches and Head Office to resolve finance queries.
• Identify opportunities to improve processes, controls and reporting.
• Provide support and guidance to Finance colleagues.

Assistant Management Accountant – Internal Vacancy

The Opportunity

We are pleased to announce an internal development opportunity within our Finance team for an Assistant Management Accountant. This role is an excellent next step for an experienced Finance Assistant who is ready to take greater ownership of accounting activities and develop towards a Management Accountant position. Working closely with the Finance Manager, you will contribute to the preparation of monthly management accounts, balance sheet reconciliations, financial reporting, variance analysis, budgeting and forecasting, while continuing to support the wider Finance function.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and post month-end journals, including accruals, prepayments, depreciation and intercompany transactions.
• Take ownership of assigned areas of the monthly management accounts.
• Prepare and maintain accurate balance sheet reconciliations, investigating and resolving outstanding items.
• Review financial information and investigate unusual transactions, discrepancies and variances.
• Support daily bank reconciliations and review cash, card and other control accounts.
• Assist with maintaining the fixed asset register, including additions, disposals and depreciation.
• Prepare regular financial reports and ad-hoc analysis for the Finance Manager and senior Finance team.
• Support the preparation of budgets and forecasts and analyse actual performance against these.
• Assist with VAT returns and other financial and statutory information requirements.
• Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for the annual financial accounts and external audit.
• Work with branches and Head Office departments to investigate and resolve finance-related queries.
• Identify opportunities to improve Finance processes, controls, reporting and efficiency.
• Provide support and guidance to colleagues within the Finance team when required.

What We’re Looking For

• Strong experience within the Finance team and a good understanding of the company’s financial processes.
• A good understanding of double-entry bookkeeping, reconciliations, accruals and prepayments.
• Strong numerical and analytical skills, with excellent attention to detail.
• Confidence using Excel, including lookups, SUMIFS and PivotTables.
• The ability to investigate discrepancies independently and explain findings clearly.
• Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities and month-end deadlines.
• Readiness to take greater ownership and accountability for your work.
• A positive approach to professional development and learning.
• Someone studying towards, or interested in working towards, an accounting qualification such as AAT, ACCA or CIMA.
