The Minnesota Historical Society is seeking an Intern for Volunteer Services at the History Center in St. Paul. The role supports recruitment, onboarding, training, and recognition of volunteers across MNHS sites and helps implement a new volunteer management system.

Flexibility with school schedules is provided and some evenings/weekends are required. Responsibilities include outreach, system training, volunteer orientation, and tabling at recruitment events, with a focus on customer service

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student, or graduated within the past 12 months.
  • Ideal candidates may have studied History, Nonprofit Management, Communications, Human Resources, Sociology, Psychology or Event management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer-focused attitude toward volunteers and staff.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and ability to learn new software.
  • High energy with confidence presenting or tabling at events.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high level customer service to volunteers and staff; maintain clear communication and relationships.
  • Assist with implementing and training on the new volunteer management system across sites; support training for staff and volunteers.
  • Aid in recruiting and placing volunteers, including posting opportunities, sending emails, tabling events, and conducting information sessions.

Intern - Volunteer Services Intern

LOCATION: History Center – 345 W Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55102

COMPENSATION: Typical starting salary $17.02 hourly

HOURS: This is a part-time, temporary position from approximately January 19, 2027 to May 23, 2027. A part-time intern must be available to work 15 hours per week. This position offers a flexible work schedule, coordinated with the intern’s school schedule and operational needs. Preferred working hours are 3-5 hour shifts M-F between 9am and 5pm. The internship includes some evening and weekend shifts, which will be scheduled in advance with the intern.

SEMINAR EVENTS: Interns are required to participate in three, in-person seminars focused on professional development, learning how cultural organizations operate, and building a network of industry professionals. At the end of the semester, interns complete a final presentation to share their work.

  • Thursday, February 4 from 11:30am-1:00pm
  • Thursday, March 18 from 1:00-3:00pm
  • Thursday, April 22 from 2:00-4:00pm
  • Final Presentations: May 23 from 11:30am-1:00pm

DESCRIPTION: This position will support the Volunteer Services team in the recruitment, onboarding, training, support, and recognition of volunteers throughout the MNHS sites. This position will support the implementation and training of both staff and volunteers on our new Volunteer Management system. Spring is when we do a lot of recruitment for summer roles at sites - the intern will participate in tabling recruitment events in the community.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 1) Provide a high level of customer service to both volunteers and staff in other departments, ensuring consistent communication and relationship building; 2) Support the Volunteer Services team in rolling out a new volunteer management system including system set up, staff training, and volunteer training at various sites; 3) Assist with volunteer recruitment and placement, including posting opportunities, sending recruitment emails, tabling at community events, putting on information sessions at sites, and creating and implementing an in person and online volunteer orientation.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student, or have graduated within the past 12 months at the time of application.
  • Ideal candidates might be currently pursuing, or a graduate with a degree in the following areas: History, Nonprofit Management, Communications, Human Resources, Sociology, Psychology, Event management.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with a welcoming, customer-focused attitude toward volunteers, staff, and community members.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and comfort adapting to or learning new software systems.
  • High energy and confidence presenting or tabling at community recruitment events and information sessions.
