Job summary

Knorr-Brake Company, in Irving, TX, seeks a Systems Engineering Intern for the 2027 summer term. You will work on LEADER product family deployment, data analysis, and onboard hardware preparation, reporting to the Manager of Sales and Systems Engineering.

The role involves scripting on Linux, test automation, defect diagnosis, and documentation handovers. Requires enrollment in an accredited engineering program and experience with Python, Unix/Linux, and data tools.

Qualifications

• Enrollment in an accredited Bachelor of Science or Master of Science program in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering or related, with at least two years completed by start of term.
• Demonstrable capability in at least one scripting or programming language, Python preferred.
• Proficient use of Unix/Linux environments and the command line.
• Data analysis capability using Excel, Python, MATLAB or equivalent.
• Use of Microsoft Office suite for communication and documentation.
• Ability to carry an assigned task to completion and to overcome impediments.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain automation scripts supporting engineering systems on Linux hosts.
• Extend the test automation harness, run regression campaigns, and produce pass/fail/error reports.
• Diagnose and fix defects in tools, including data accuracy and unit conversion.
• Deploy and configure engineering web apps and VM environments.
• Prepare, image and commission onboard LEADER hardware if needed.
• Analyze recorded locomotive data to support incident investigation and product performance review.
• Prepare design and hand-over documentation for internal review.

JOB DESCRIPTION

New York Air Brake (NYAB) has served the rail industry since 1890. The Train Dynamics Systems (TDS) Division is the worldwide leader in train dynamics, train control and automation expertise, and is the home of LEADER product family that delivers fuel efficiency and improved train handling to railroads in North America, South America and Australia. The Sales and Systems Engineering group within TDS holds system-level responsibility for the LEADER product family across its lifecycle: customer requirements; system design; verification and test; deployment; and in-service support.

NYAB is seeking a Systems Engineering Intern to join that group for the 2027 summer term. The position reports to the Manager, Sales and Systems Engineering, and carries discrete deliverables owned end to end across the software, data analysis and onboard hardware sides of the product.

The Intern shall contribute to the engineering, deployment and support of the LEADER product family, working alongside the systems engineers assigned to each railroad program. This includes:

• development and maintenance of automation scripts supporting engineering systems on Linux hosts;
• extension of the group's test automation harness, execution of regression campaigns across multiple projects, and production of pass, fail and error summary reporting;
• diagnosis and correction of defects in the group's tools, covering data accuracy, unit conversion and visualization;
• deployment and configuration of engineering web applications and virtual machine environments;
• preparation, imaging and commissioning of onboard LEADER hardware, if necessary;
• analysis of recorded locomotive data in support of incident investigation and product performance review; and
• preparation of design and hand-over documentation to the standard required for internal review.

Requirements

• enrollment in an accredited Bachelor of Science or Master of Science program in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, with at least two (2) years completed by the start of the term;
• demonstrable capability in at least one scripting or programming language, Python preferred;
• proficient use of Unix/Linux environments and the command line;
• data analysis capability using Excel, Python, MATLAB or equivalent;
• use of the standard Microsoft Office suite for communication and documentation; and
• ability to carry an assigned task to completion, and to escape an impediment once identified.

Preferred

• coursework or project experience in control systems, embedded systems or signal processing;
• exposure to virtualization, web application deployment or relational databases;
• familiarity with version control and continuous integration tooling, Perforce and Jenkins in particular; and
• interest in rail operations, train dynamics or locomotive systems; prior rail experience is not required.
