Michigan Paving and Materials is offering a summer internship in Mine Engineering in Monroe, MI. The program runs from mid-May/early June 2027 through August 2027 for students enrolled in an accredited college, university, or trade school. Interns must be 18+, able to perform outdoors and indoors, and pass pre-employment checks.

Interns will assist with field data collection, mapping, safety tasks, regulatory compliance, and support blasting operations alongside operations personnel.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a college degree program related to the mining industry.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Willing to obtain MSHA New Miner Training and FAA Part 107 for sUAV.
  • Ability to work without close supervision; strong ethics.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good internet research and evaluation skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication.

Responsibilities

  • Review maps and drilling logs to estimate deposits.
  • Assist long-range planning designs and data.
  • Identify safety hazards and respond appropriately.
  • Adhere to state and federal regulations (DOT/OSHA/MSHA) as applicable.
  • Operate sUAV for mine planning and mapping.
  • Support quality control/quality assurance efforts.
  • Spend time in field operations for aggregates.
  • Work with operations on monthly projections.
  • Shadow operations staff to learn planning and objectives.
  • Coordinate with crews on blasting operations.

Position Overview

We are seeking a summer intern. The desired area of interest is Mine Engineering. The intern season will begin between mid-May/early June 2027 and run through August 2027. The location is in Monroe, MI.

To qualify for the intern program, you must be enrolled in an accredited college, university, or trade school. Most of our intern positions will work in outdoor and indoor conditions. Interns must be 18 years or older and able to perform the job duties with or without accommodation.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions):

  • Collaborates and conducts with others geographical exploration by reviewing maps and drilling logs to determine location, size, accessibility and estimated volumes of deposits
  • Assists in determining long-range planning designs and data
  • Ability to detect safety hazards and respond accordingly.
  • Adhere to any and all state and federal regulations, if applicable, as set forth by the US Department of Transportation (DOT), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), or any other regulatory agency
  • Operate sUAV for mine planning, topography mapping and stripping calculations.
  • Quality Control/Quality Assurance
  • Spend time in field operations for aggregates
  • Work with operations on monthly projections
  • Shadow operations personnel to learn operational planning and aggregate objectives
  • Work with crews and managers on blasting operations

Qualifications

  • Ideal candidate must be currently enrolled in a college degree program related to the industry and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75 or better
  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check
  • Must maintain current driver’s license that meets state requirements
  • Must have or be willing to obtain MSHA New Miner Training, And FAA Part 107 Certification for sUAV Operator
  • Must have the ability to work without close supervision
  • High ethical standards
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Capable of utilizing the internet effectively for research and evaluation
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written)
