Job summary

Dominion Energy South Carolina (DESC) invites motivated students to join our 2027 Summer engineering intern program in Power Delivery Operations. You will gain hands-on experience delivering electricity from plants to customers and preparing for entry-level professional roles.

The program emphasizes safety, teamwork, and learning through field work in substations and on construction sites, reviewing drawings, and using basic tools under supervision. A housing stipend is available.

Qualifications

  • Must demonstrate a strong commitment to safety.
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to read and understand construction drawings and technical documents.
  • Must be pursuing ABET-accredited BS degrees in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Graduating Fall 2027–2029 with a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with installation, inspection, testing, repair, and replacement of substation equipment.
  • Work outdoors in substations and construction areas under varying weather conditions.
  • Review construction drawings and technical documents used to support field activities.
  • Use basic hand tools, power tools, and testing equipment under supervision.
  • Travel to substation locations across the service territory; support restoration efforts after storms.

Job Summary

Dominion Energy South Carolina (DESC) is seeking students for our 2027 Summer engineering intern program for positions in Power Delivery Operations. The program is designed to attract, develop, and retain high-potential college students. Upon graduation and successful completion of our program, participants may be eligible for consideration for a full‑time position within one of DESC’s core businesses.

Students will have the opportunity to gain knowledge in the field of electric operations through the delivery of electricity from the power plant to the end user via transmission lines, substations, and distribution systems. This experience will help prepare students upon graduation to compete for entry‑level, professional positions in the utility industry.

Power Delivery Operations is responsible for the construction and maintenance of high‑voltage electrical equipment within distribution, transmission, and generation substations. This work includes the installation, inspection, testing, troubleshooting, repair, and replacement of breakers, transformers, switches, control equipment, and other substation components.

Working Conditions
  • Work alongside substation construction and maintenance crews during the installation, inspection, testing, repair, and replacement of substation equipment.
  • Perform work primarily outdoors in substations and construction areas under varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, humidity, and direct sunlight.
  • Assist with reviewing construction drawings, job plans, and other technical documents used to support field activities.
  • Use basic hand tools, power tools, and testing equipment under the direction of qualified employees.
  • Work around heavy equipment, construction vehicles, energized electrical facilities, uneven terrain, excavations, noise, dust, and other conditions commonly found at substation worksites.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment, which may include a hard hat, safety glasses, protective footwear, gloves, and hearing protection.
  • Travel to substation locations throughout the company’s service territory and occasionally work outside normal business hours based on project and maintenance needs.
  • Occasionally support restoration efforts following storms and other power outage events.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
  • Must demonstrate a strong commitment to safety.
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills and be able to communicate effectively.
  • Must be able to work effectively as part of a crew and independently when assigned specific tasks.
  • Must be able to read and develop a basic understanding of construction drawings, equipment manuals, wiring diagrams, one-line diagrams, and other technical documents.
  • Must have a basic understanding of electrical theory or the ability and willingness to learn.
  • Must be comfortable working around high voltage electrical equipment.
  • Must have basic computer skills and the ability to learn and use Microsoft Office products.
  • Must live within a reasonable commuting distance of the assigned work location and have reliable transportation. (Note: A housing stipend/allowance is available for eligible students).
  • Must be able to move about freely and perform field work in challenging environments.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a safe driving history.
  • Must be able to travel and work outside of normal business hours throughout the company’s service territory.
Education Requirements
  • Must be in the process of obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program at a 4 year college or university.
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5.
  • Must have a graduation date in the fall of 2027 to 2029
