Job summary

Southland Industries offers an immersive Internship and New College Graduate program designed to launch careers in the design/build construction industry. Interns assist project managers, coordinate resources, and gain exposure to design, estimating, scheduling, and procurement.

Candidates pursue relevant degrees (engineering, construction management, safety) and show initiative, teamwork, and strong communication.

Qualifications

• You’re pursuing a degree that aligns with Southland needs in Mechanical, Architectural, Electrical Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Safety Sciences or related fields.
• Strong interest in technical coursework (fluids, heat transfer, CM scheduling, finance, etc.).
• Demonstrates initiative, resilience, and the ability to work with limited supervision.
• Excellent business writing and public speaking skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist a project manager to coordinate a project using engineering, labor, equipment, materials, tools, and subcontracted services.
• Develop skills in design, estimating, construction processes, workflow and scheduling.
• Contribute to procurement of equipment, materials, subcontractors and services.
• Assist in budget analysis, cost and margin projections, and estimates of project changes and impacts.
• Help develop and manage project schedules; assist in change order management and submittal packages.
• Support the construction team as needed.

Position Summary

Our internship program is designed to introduce students to a career in the Design/Build construction industry. Primary responsibility is to assist a project manager to successfully coordinate a project using the necessary engineering, labor, equipment, materials, tools, and subcontracted services. This position requires the development of skills in design, estimating , construction process, workflow and scheduling to better understand the coordination of the design-build construction process.Candidates may be assigned to construction projects located in the Great Los Angeles Area and/or CA Central Coast areas

• Equipment & Subcontractor procurement
• Document Control
• Design, Trade & Subcontractor coordination
• Assist in budget analysis, cost and margin projections, estimate project changes & impacts, etc.
• Assist in the development and management of project schedules.
• Assist in estimating the impact of project changes.
• Assist management of change orders.
• Assist with assembling of submittal packages and other required project documentation.
• Assists with procurement of equipment, materials, subcontractors, and other project related services.
• Support construction team as needed.

What you’ll gain from our Student Programs at Southland Industries:

• The ability to read engineering drawings and identify work installed to track labor feedback accurately.
• Prepare job related logs to include RFIs, submittals, design changes, subcontractor progress/schedules
• You’ll learn to communicate effectively with engineers, vendors and suppliers to procure, manage and update the submittal process.
• Learn to write and track Requests for Information (RFI)
• Gain an understanding of construction processes and workflow
• Finally, you’ll get your hands dirty!

Pay:

For California-based internship roles, the pay rate is set at $26.00 per hour, in alignment with program guidelines and market standards.
