Responsibilities

• Provide frontline customer service and public outreach to promote community awareness of disaster preparedness and risk reduction.
• Support development and implementation of educational campaigns and special event programming.
• Conduct research on emergency preparedness programs and best practices to inform planning and program development.
• Assist in administration and data integrity of the PSN Registry, including database maintenance and outreach coordination.
• Review and analyze emergency plans and compliance documentation for healthcare partners to ensure alignment with requirements.
• Assist in development and integration of shelter management plans across partner agencies.
• Develop, facilitate, and evaluate emergency management exercises using HSEEP; assist with After-Action Reports and Improvement Plans.
• Participate in emergency operations during activations under leadership, and engage in drills region-wide.
• Support the County’s whole-community approach with partnerships across sectors.
• Contribute to grant applications for federal and state mitigation funding opportunities.

Job description

The purpose of this temporary internship position is to provide college students with opportunities to gain experience in the field of emergency management and public administration. Interns will participate in real-world projects, work within the Emergency Operations Center during activations, develop plans and procedures for disaster response, and collaborate closely with first-response and support agencies.

Provide frontline customer service and public outreach to promote community awareness of disaster preparedness and risk reduction.

Support the development and implementation of educational campaigns and special event programming to foster a culture of preparedness across the County.

Conduct research on emergency preparedness programs and best practices to inform planning and program development efforts.

Assist in the administration and data integrity of the Persons with Special Needs (PSN) Registry, including database maintenance and outreach coordination.

Review and analyze emergency plans and compliance documentation for hospitals, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and other healthcare partners to ensure alignment with local, state, and federal requirements.

Assist in the review, development, and integration of shelter management plans, including plan consolidation and coordination across partner agencies.

Develop, facilitate, and evaluate emergency management exercises using Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program (HSEEP) standards; support the preparation of After-Action Reports (AARs) and Improvement Plans (IPs).

Participate in emergency operations during activations, supporting coordination and response efforts under the direction of emergency management leadership.

Engage in drills and exercises across Seminole County and the Central Florida region to enhance operational knowledge and collaborative capabilities.

Support the County’s whole-community approach by helping to strengthen partnerships between government agencies, non-profits, faith-based organizations, and private sector stakeholders.

Conduct research and contribute to the preparation of grant applications for federal and state mitigation funding opportunities, including HMGP, FMA,, Shelter Retrofit, and Wind Retrofit grants.

Assist in tracking progress and outcomes aligned with the Division’s Strategic Plan and contribute to program reporting and performance metrics.

Additional Duties

Performs other related work as required. In the event of an emergency, all employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to perform alternate duties.

Must be enrolled, or graduated in less than one year, from a higher education organization (university, college, or technical institute).

A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

• Must be proficient in Business English, spelling, punctuation, and arithmetic, along with modern office practices and procedures, including record keeping methods.
• Must be able to compose effective and accurate correspondence.
• Must possess the ability to effectively interact with internal and external customers and at all levels of the organization.
• Must be skilled in written and verbal communication.
• Must be proficient with personal computer and general office equipment
• Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and other related software is required.
• Persons with experience in SharePoint are preferred.
• All employees must attend Seminole County Required Trainings.
