Job summary

The American Heart Association is seeking a Development Team intern in Houston to support fundraising campaigns including Heart Walk, Go Red for Women, Heart of Houston, and related events. You will gain hands-on experience in donor stewardship, prospect research, campaign management and volunteer engagement in a nonprofit setting.

The internship offers 20–25 hours per week, 1/25/27–5/7/27, located at the Houston, TX Office, with compensation at $23.00 per hour and access to Heart U and other

Qualifications

• Seniors or graduate students pursuing a degree in business, communications, nonprofit management or event management are preferred.
• Experience in promotion, sales, or fundraising.
• Must be comfortable with vendor outreach (phone calls & emails to vendors & donors).
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• Demonstrated skills in effective one-on-one and group communications and comfort with working with community leaders, volunteers, and staff.
• Proficient in multiple social media platforms.
• Intermediate to excellent proficiency in Microsoft Office and Canva.

Responsibilities

• Support the Development Team with planning and implementation of fundraising campaigns, donor stewardship, and volunteer engagement activities.
• Conduct prospect research and compile information on potential corporate and community partners.
• Assist with data entry, report generation, and record maintenance in Salesforce, Tableau, and other fundraising systems.
• Prepare meeting materials, presentations, and campaign collateral to support fundraising initiatives.
• Provide administrative support for volunteer committees, including meeting preparation, scheduling, and follow-up.
• Assist with outreach and communications to volunteers, sponsors, and community partners as directed by development staff.
• Assist in developing and updating marketing materials for campaigns including save the dates, invitations, volunteer rosters, and other needed collateral to assist in campaign promotion.
• Support the development of print, TV and social media content.
• Provide support for special events and campaign activities, including pre-event preparation and post-event follow-up as needed.

The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands‑on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non‑profit, voluntary health organization.

We have an exciting opportunity for an intern on our Development Team. As an intern supporting fundraising initiatives including Heart Walk, Go Red for Women, Heart of Houston, and other market campaigns, you will gain hands‑on experience in fundraising, volunteer engagement, prospect research, donor stewardship, corporate partnerships, campaign management and related event support as needed. The intern will support the Development Team in advancing the American Heart Association's mission through fundraising initiatives, community engagement, and campaign activities that contribute to the success of these impactful efforts.

Qualifications

• Candidates who are seniors or graduate students pursuing a degree in business, communications, public relations, nonprofit management or event management are preferred.
• Experience/interest in promotion, sales, or fundraising.
• Must be comfortable with vendor outreach (phone calls & emails to vendors & donors).
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment
• Demonstrated skills in effective one‑on‑one and group communications and comfort with working professionally with all levels of community leaders, volunteers, and staff.
• Proficient in multiple social media platforms.
• Intermediate to excellent proficiency in Microsoft Office and Canva.
• Required:Reliable WiFi Connection and reliable transportation.
• Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-4:30pm.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
