Job summary

Granite Construction seeks a summer Intern – Construction/Engineering in Garland, TX. You will assist the project team with field construction activities, documentation, and cost tracking in Heavy Job and FIS systems.

This role offers practical exposure to heavy-civil projects and mentorship from engineers. Ideal candidates are currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in construction or engineering, with strong communication, teamwork, and readiness to travel.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the project team with field construction activities and documentation.

  • Coordinate with foremen, superintendents, owners, and subcontractors.
  • Help generate daily reports and assist with material orders and locates.

With locations across the country and unique opportunities for hands-on experience, mentorship and networking, there’s never been a better time to join our team. **General Summary**This is a summer internship assignment where you will assist a project team with management, field construction activities, and documentation of a project. It is a great way to experience the heavy-civil industry and Granite Construction. Many students are able to get course credit, please check with your faculty advisor, and at the same time earn an income while learning.**Accountabilities:*** Communicate with foremen and superintendent to learn about field construction operations and to provide support.* Establish and maintain working relationships with owners, agencies, subcontractors, inspectors, & the local community.* Assist the project engineer with approving timecards in Heavy Job, and ensure all equipment and employee time is accounted for accurately.* Provide support with verifying quantities in FIS (Field Information Systems) and log quantities for cost and revenue tracking.* Assist the project engineer with generating and distributing daily cost reports (trucking, labor, equipment) to the project manager, foreman, and superintendent.* Assist with the completion of daily reports documenting both Intermountain Slurry Seal and subcontractor activities.* Place necessary material orders, survey requests, locates, etc.* Assist with the calculations of yields of materials used such as concrete, aggregate base & asphalt.* Supports the jobsite daily with the project manager or engineer to verify quantities claimed are correct and to stay current on overall job progress.* Additional responsibilities as needed.**Education*** Currently enrolled in a Construction, Engineering, or related undergraduate program at an accredited 4-year university.**Knowledge, skills, and abilities:*** Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.* Ability to work in high production environment and respond quickly and effectively under pressure and deadlines.* Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook* Availability and willingness to travel frequently* Bilingual English/Spanish (Preferred but not required)**Physical Demands:**The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit and use hands to operate a computer keyboard. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and must have the ability to climb stairs and ladders in a construction/ plant environment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds from floor to waist. Specific vision abilities required by this job include at least 20/30 Snellen in one eye and 20/50 in the other, with or without corrective lenses. Adequate hearing, with or without a hearing aid.
