Job summary

SmithGroup, an integrated design firm, is seeking an Intermediate Plumbing Designer for its Washington, DC office. The role involves analysis, design, and documentation of plumbing systems, coordinating with drawings for permits and bids, and visiting construction sites to observe and respond to contractor questions.

The ideal candidate has 3+ years’ CAD/Revit plumbing experience, knowledge of plumbing codes, and the ability to communicate with multiple disciplines.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience with CAD/Revit and plumbing system design.
  • Working knowledge of plumbing codes and design standards.
  • Understanding of lab and medical gas system designs is preferred.
  • ASPE membership is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform analysis, design and documentation of plumbing systems.
  • Produce and coordinate construction documents for permitting and bidding.
  • Coordinate specifications with drawings to meet project requirements.
  • Visit construction sites for observation and respond to contractor questions.
  • Mentor and train graduate engineers, designers and interns.
  • Manage aspects of plumbing projects with guidance from senior staff.
  • Coordinate and review the work of other designers and interns.

The Washington, DC office of SmithGroup is looking for an Intermediate Plumbing Designer to join our team.

Working with us, you will:
  • Perform analysis, design and documentation of plumbing systems.
  • Produce and coordinate a complete set of construction documents for permitting and bidding of plumbing design and engineering projects.
  • Coordinate specifications with drawings to meet project requirements.
  • Visit construction sites as required for observation, answer contractor questions, and represent the owner in preparing punch lists.
  • Determine procedures to design, develop, and document project or system based on an evaluation of its unique needs and constraints.
  • Advance designs developed by others and assess design requirements.
  • Have knowledge of basic drawing details and the ability to research more complex details.
  • Manage aspects of plumbing projects with assistance of senior plumbing designer.
  • Coordinate and review the work of other designers and interns assigned to projects.
  • Determine a level of effort required for a given assignment and provide input on scheduling.
  • Mentor and train graduate engineers, designers, and interns.
An ideal candidate has:
  • High school diploma, general education degree (GED), or Associate degree in Engineering Technology or related field from a technical school or college.
  • 3+ years of experience with CAD/Revit and plumbing system design.
  • Working knowledge of plumbing codes and design standards.
  • An understanding of lab and medical gas system designs, preferred.
  • Membership in the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) preferred.
  • The ability to discern and apply proper engineering design approaches to systems in a variety of building types.
  • A working knowledge of architectural concepts and the ability to understand and communicate with professionals of other disciplines, team members, consultants and clients.
  • Proficiency in current design software (CAD, Revit, etc.), Microsoft Office, and PDF software (Adobe/Bluebeam).
  • LEED Green Associate accreditation preferred.

While we may ultimately pay more or less than a posted salary range, at the time of posting the anticipated salary range for this position is $32.21 to $39.90 per hour. You are eligible to receive overtime pay for hours worked beyond 40 in a work week and a performance-based bonus each year.
