UTLX, part of Marmon Holdings, backed by Berkshire Hathaway, seeks an Interior Blaster for the 3rd shift (Sun–Thu, 10:30 pm–6:30 am) in Valdosta, GA. The role covers surface prep, blasting, coating application, and bake monitoring for railcars.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare interior/exterior tank or hopper car surfaces for coating by removing rust, scale, and contaminants.
  • Blast with hand-held nozzles, remove grit, dust, and weld spatter; grind edges as needed.
  • Mix coatings per specifications and apply with airless spray; mask areas to protect from overspray.
  • Maintain equipment, replenish supplies, and ensure bake procedures are followed and recorded.
  • Apply decals after coating and complete final inspections with clean, organized work area.

** Looking for Interior Blasters for our 3rd Shift to join our team** the shift is Sunday - Thursday, 10:30 pm - 6:30 am.

Primary Job Functions– below is a general description of the essential functions of this job. This is not an exhaustive list and employees in these classifications frequently may be required to perform additional duties. Not all classifications will be required to perform all functions. The employee is responsible for the quality assurance requirements of each task performed.

Prepares the interior or exterior surface of the tank or hopper car for coating or lining by removing rust, weld slag, scale or other foreign contaminants by directing shot laden compressed air from hand held blast nozzles. Uses safety approved air gun to remove grit and dust after blasting. Removes all protective car coverings, blows trucks and other car parts clean and inspects the car to ensure that it has not been damaged. Removes all weld spatter, laminations, and sharp edges from inside tank/hopper cars by grinding. Grinds girth weld level on floor when required. Vacuums complete interior of tank/hopper car. Foils and taps all stainless steel inside tank car as required. Maintains his equipment and replenishes the shot supply. Selects coatings following work specifications and prepares equipment for spraying. Masks off components such as valves, trucks, couplers, or areas of the surface not to be sprayed. Mixes coatings according to specifications and applies the coating to install or repair a section of a coating using airless spray equipment. This may be to an exterior or interior of a tank or hopper car. Cleans and maintains spraying equipment. After tank or hopper car is coated, they apply piping prior to starting the bake procedure. They also turn on the blower for a specified period of time before introducing the temperature input. Monitors the bake temperature per specifications until the intermediate bake or final bake has been completed. Maintains and stores a record of the baking operations. Applies decals as required to the tank or hopper car exterior. Cleans completed interior coating prior to final inspection. Maintains work area in a neat and orderly manner and reports potential hazards.

Knowledge and Skills Required
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Must be able to work effectively and efficiently both as a member of a team and independently.
  • Able to follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervision.
  • Dependable and reliable to show up for scheduled work shifts including overtime.
  • Willingness to wear required PPE at all times and always work safely.
  • Ability to understand and follow UTLX operating procedures and policies based on safety and field training.
Working Conditions
  • Exposed to dirt, fumes, smoke, and heat.
  • Work outdoors and will be exposed to the elements.
  • Physical effort in lifting and carrying materials and attaching rigging devices. Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Moderate physical exertion is required. Positions relatively heavy objects by using a forklift or other mechanical means.
  • Manual dexterity in operating control levers and buttons.
  • Exposed to dirt, fumes, smoke, and heat.
  • Some climbing into and out of vehicles, crane cabs, etc.
  • Some outside work possible minor cuts and bruises. Must exercise caution in operation of equipment in confined areas.
  • Possible exposure to hazardous materials or hazardous waste from leaks or spills of these materials while moving or storing them.
