Job summary

UTLX, part of Marmon Holdings, is hiring a welder to perform welding and repair work on tank cars and related components. The role requires welding expertise, adherence to safety protocols, and the ability to work both in a team and independently.

The position involves lifting up to 50 pounds, operating various tools, and following established procedures to ensure quality and safety in every repair project.

  • Welds components related to tank cars including tanks, bolsters, underframes, side sills, etc.
  • Performs welded repairs using air arc cutting torch and stick or wire welding equipment.
  • Uses hand tools to chip and grind weld, slag or spatter.
  • Repairs, straightens, removes, reworks car parts, brakes, underframes, center plates, gears, couplers, valves, etc.

Responsible for the entire sequence of cutting and welding operations for a wide variety of repair and fabrication work. Aligns and welds components of metal tools, wires, fixtures and other metal products. May utilize different types of welding systems for different tasks. Maintains a safe work area and may train apprentices in the trade.

Primary Job Functions
  • Welds components related to tank cars including tanks, bolsters, underframes, side sills, etc.
  • Performs welded repairs by utilizing air arc cutting torch and stick or wire welding equipment.
  • Uses hand tools and equipment to chip and grind weld, slag or spatter.
  • Repairs, straightens, removes, reworks car parts, brakes, underframes, center plates, gears, couplers, valves, etc using various hand and power tools.
  • Perform welding and mechanical repairs to tank and hopper cars when required.
  • Maintains work area in a neat and orderly manner and reports potential hazards.
Knowledge and Skills Required
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Must pass the applicable welding test as prescribed by the company.
  • Must be able to work effectively and efficiently both as a member of a team and independently.
  • Able to follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervision.
  • Dependable and reliable to show up for scheduled work shifts including overtime.
  • Willingness to wear required PPE at all times and always work safely.
  • Ability to understand and follow UTLX operating procedures and policies based on safety and field training.
Working Conditions
  • Exposed to dirt, fumes, smoke, and heat.
  • Work outdoors and will be exposed to the elements.
  • Physical effort in lifting and carrying materials and attaching rigging devices. Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Moderate physical exertion is required. Positions relatively heavy objects by using a forklift or other mechanical means.
  • Manual dexterity in operating control levers and buttons.
  • Exposed to dirt, fumes, smoke, and heat.
  • Some climbing into and out of vehicles, crane cabs, etc.
  • Some outside work possible minor cuts and bruises. Must exercise caution in operation of equipment in confined areas.
  • Possible exposure to hazardous materials or hazardous waste from leaks or spills of these materials while moving or storing them.
