Interim Operations Project Manager, Energy & Infrastructure Construction
Job Overview

The Operations Project Manager is responsible for leading the successful execution of energy and infrastructure construction projects from planning and mobilization through completion. This role serves as a key operational leader, coordinating field teams, subcontractors, vendors, project controls, and clients to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with contract requirements.

The ideal candidate combines strong construction project management experience with excellent operational, financial, and leadership skills. This individual will be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities, resolving field issues, and driving accountability across project teams.

Key Responsibilities
Project & Operations Management
  • Lead day-to-day operations for assigned energy and infrastructure construction projects.
  • Manage projects from preconstruction and mobilization through execution, closeout, and final turnover.
  • Develop and maintain project execution plans, schedules, milestones, and resource requirements.
  • Coordinate field operations, project management, engineering, procurement, equipment, and subcontractor activities.
  • Monitor project progress and proactively identify risks, schedule impacts, resource constraints, and operational challenges.
  • Ensure project teams have the resources, materials, equipment, and personnel required to maintain productivity.
  • Establish clear expectations, accountability, and performance standards for project teams.
  • Own project financial performance, including budgets, forecasts, cost tracking, and profitability.
  • Monitor labor, equipment, materials, subcontractor, and other project costs.
  • Review project financials and investigate cost variances, productivity issues, and margin erosion.
  • Support change order development, pricing, negotiation, and documentation.
  • Ensure accurate forecasting of project revenue, costs, cash flow, and anticipated profitability.
  • Partner with finance and project controls teams to maintain accurate project reporting.
  • Identify opportunities to improve productivity, reduce costs, and maximize project margins.
Construction Execution
  • Partner closely with Superintendents, Project Managers, Foremen, and field personnel to drive efficient project execution.
  • Monitor production against established schedules, budgets, and performance expectations.
  • Resolve construction issues and coordinate solutions involving engineering, procurement, subcontractors, and clients.
  • Review project plans, specifications, scopes of work, and contract requirements.
  • Coordinate procurement, equipment utilization, material deliveries, and subcontractor mobilization.
  • Ensure proper documentation of daily activities, progress, delays, changes, and project issues.
  • Support commissioning, punch-list activities, project turnover, and closeout.
Safety & Quality
  • Promote a strong safety-first culture throughout project operations.
  • Partner with safety leadership to ensure compliance with company policies, OSHA requirements, and project-specific safety standards.
  • Monitor field operations for adherence to safety and quality requirements.
  • Ensure quality control processes are implemented and maintained throughout construction.
  • Participate in incident investigations, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Hold project teams and subcontractors accountable for safety and quality performance.
Client & Stakeholder Management
  • Serve as a senior operational point of contact for clients, owners, engineers, utilities, and other project stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships through consistent communication and execution.
  • Lead or participate in project meetings, progress reviews, and operational planning sessions.
  • Communicate project status, financial performance, schedule risks, change orders, and critical issues to leadership and clients.
  • Manage expectations and proactively address issues before they impact project performance.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop project and field personnel.
  • Promote collaboration between operations, estimating, engineering, procurement, finance, safety, and project controls.
  • Establish performance expectations and provide coaching and feedback.
  • Assist with staffing plans, resource allocation, and workforce planning.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, ownership, safety, and continuous improvement.
Process Improvement
  • Identify opportunities to improve construction processes, project controls, field productivity, and operational efficiency.
  • Develop and implement standardized procedures, reporting tools, and best practices.
  • Conduct post-project reviews and incorporate lessons learned into future projects.
  • Support implementation and optimization of project management, ERP, scheduling, and field management systems.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, Operations, or a related field preferred.
  • 7+ years of progressive construction project management or operations experience, preferably within energy, utilities, infrastructure, industrial, civil, or related construction.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex construction projects from mobilization through completion.
  • Strong understanding of construction contracts, project schedules, budgets, cost controls, and change management.
  • Experience managing subcontractors, vendors, field personnel, and multiple project stakeholders.
  • Strong financial acumen with the ability to understand project P&Ls, forecasts, cost reports, and margins.
  • Experience with construction scheduling and project management software.
  • Strong knowledge of construction safety and quality requirements.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to travel regularly to active project sites as required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in energy infrastructure, power, utilities, renewable energy, transmission & distribution, electrical infrastructure, or industrial construction.
  • Experience with EPC, design-build, or self-perform construction environments.
  • Experience managing projects with significant subcontractor and equipment components.
  • PMP, OSHA, or other relevant construction/project management certifications.
  • Experience with ERP and construction management platforms such as Procore, Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, or similar systems.
  • Strong understanding of contract terms, risk management, claims, and change orders.
