Intensive English Program Teaching Assistant. Minimum Qualifications & Summary

The Intensive English Program (IEP) at the University of Georgia seeks a motivated, flexible, and dependable teaching Assistant for 2025/2026. The candidate will work with incoming Korean visiting scholars to provide 1-on-1 English tutoring, support instructors and students in the classroom, participate in planning and implementing instruction and assessment, and collaborate with the IEP Program Assistant to create opportunities for students to use English outside of the classroom.

Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification
  • Have a TESOL or World Language Education background or currently pursue a degree or certification in TESOL or World Language Education
  • Have experience with teaching adult learners
  • Have proficiency in Korean
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Currently be an undergraduate or graduate student in Language and Literacy Education, World Language Education, English, Linguistics, or a related field
  • Be a native speaker of English
  • Have a minimum 3.5 overall GPA
  • Display a genuine interest in the mission of the IEP and the learning progress of our students
  • Have experience with providing English tutoring to speakers of English as a foreign language
  • Have excellent communication skills and a patient approach to teaching second language learners
Duties & Responsibilities

Provide 1-on-1 English tutoring for Korean visiting scholars

  • Meet with Korean visiting scholars one or two hours per week for tutoring
  • Help them improve vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and conversation participation
  • Assess English proficiency at the beginning and end of tutoring, with formative assessments throughout

Percentage of time: 60

Support IEP instructors in the classroom

  • Support instructors in class and teach parts of or entire lessons each week (under IEP instructor mentorship)
  • Participate in lesson planning and preparation
  • Assist with administering and grading quizzes and exams

Percentage of time: 15

Support IEP students in the classroom

  • Facilitate conversational activities to encourage student discussion
  • Work 1-on-1 with students
  • Support students who struggle
  • Engage students who are off-task

Percentage of time: 15

Create social engagement opportunities for IEP students outside of the classroom

  • Assist the IEP Assistant Director, Program Coordinator, and Program Assistant in planning and organizing social events and activities for IEP students
  • Participate in social events and activities, including evenings and weekends
  • Research activities and events students would like the IEP to offer
