Job summary

Rochester Public Schools is seeking a Special Education ESP to provide instructional support, behavior management, health support, and data collection at the school site under the direction of certified staff to implement IEP goals.

Duties may include in-home services, supervision in lunchrooms or playgrounds, de-escalation support, assist with personal cares, meals, field trips, and documenting student progress while building relationships with students of diverse backgrounds.

Qualifications

  • Minimum required college credits or an associate degree with a high school diploma or GED.
  • Experience working with elementary-age students preferred.
  • Flexibility and the ability to work as a cooperative team member.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instructional support and assist with implementing IEP goals under certified staff.
  • Assist with behavior management, health support, and data collection.
  • Observe and document students' academic and social progress.
  • Provide feedback on student progress to teachers and related staff.
  • Support students with personal cares and de-escalation as needed.
  • Supervise students in meal times, recess, and field trips.

WORK SCHEDULE: 6.5 hours per day

WORK CALENDAR: 180 duty days per year.

The Special Education ESP provides support to students at the school site withneeds who qualify for special education services in various school environments. The position is also responsible for implementing aspects of the student's IEP (Individual Education Plan) under the direction of certified staff.This can include instructional support, behavior management, health support, collecting data, and communicating academic and behavioral progress at the school site.Percentage of time spent on essential duties and responsibilities will be dependent on the individual student's needs and abilities.

  • Employee may need to provide services in home on an as needed basis
  • Staff may be required to report in person to a school buildingon an as needed basis
  • May monitor and/or supervise students in the lunchroom and on the playground in all types of weather.
  • Follow student Behavior Intervention Plans and Emergency Healthcare Plans.
  • Provide support to students with personal cares (toileting, dressing, feeding) as needed
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of students with different disabilities
  • Observe and document students' academic and social behaviors.
  • Consistent and accurate data collection of student progress on goals and objectives
  • Provide feedback on student progress to classroom teachers and related services staff
  • Knowledge using iPads and other devices used for communication of non-verbal students
  • Support students with de-escalation techniques and use restrictive procedures as needed (Training provided as needed).
  • Supervise students in various settings and locations in and around the school building, before, during andafter school hours.
  • Move on and off the floor to meet students at their level
  • Provide Support/Supervision at meal times, at recess and on field trips
  • Model appropriate language and social behavior
  • Able to build strong relationships with children from all backgrounds and neuro-types.
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Effective communication with all staff

  • Regular, on-time attendance is required.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum requirement; 60 college semester credits and/ora two-year degree from an accredited college or university.Please include official transcript(s) with application.
  • In lieu of college credits or degree, one can complete the Paraeducator Assessments. The passing scores in Minnesota are 65% and70%.

  • The test is available to applicants who are presented an official job offer from theRochester Public School District.
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Experience working with elementary age students.
  • Computer skills preferred.
  • Flexibility and the ability to work as a cooperative team member.
  • Positive rapport with children including the ability to correct inappropriate student behavior with fairness and consistency.
  • Regular, on-time attendance is required.
