Job description

Intellectual Property Associate or Patent Agent—Organic Chemistry Expertise

Marshall, Gerstein & Borun LLP is a Chicago-based intellectual property law firm having over 100 attorneys, highly qualified patent agents, and technical specialists, all dedicated to providing superior intellectual property counseling. We specialize in litigation and prosecution in all areas of intellectual property law. We litigate nationwide, primarily within the federal court system, and obtain patents and trademark registrations for our clients in the United States and foreign patent and trademark offices around the world.

We are currently seeking a talented Associate Attorney or Patent Agent for our Chemical practice group.

Required Credentials

  • Strong academic credentials, which should minimally include an advanced degree in Organic Chemistry. Candidates should have at least a 3.0 GPA at all levels of education.
  • At least three years of life science work experience in patent preparation and prosecution. Experience in the small molecules space is a plus.
  • Admission to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Ability to grasp new technical teachings quickly.
  • Ability to efficiently review patent and non-patent literature for key concepts.
  • Excellent communication skills--both written and verbal--and exceptional organizational skills.
  • Candidates should be detail-oriented, professional, and demonstrate the ability to take initiative and ownership of their projects.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Interviewing inventors to learn about new ideas to be patented. Our clients include some of the world’s largest and most technologically advanced companies.
  • Preparing and prosecuting patent applications, investigating and preparing non-infringement and invalidity opinions, occasionally participating in patent litigation to provide technical support, and performing related client counseling tasks.
  • This position demands that the individual will, under the supervision of senior practitioners, assume significant client responsibilities, provide high-quality services to domestic and foreign clients, communicate with all levels of management and staff and, at times, will require a significant degree of autonomy.

Patent Agent compensation for this position includes an annual salary of $120,000–$160,000 for those having 3–6 years of relevant experience plus an advanced degree. Associate compensation for this position includes an annual salary of $210,000–$275,000 for those having 3–6 years of relevant experience plus an advanced degree. Salaries are determined based on a combination of experience, educational qualifications, and meeting minimum billable hour targets. Full-time positions come with a comprehensive benefits package and opportunities to earn significant bonuses.
