Job description

Intake Advisor, Undergraduate Advising (5140C) #89536

At the University of California, Berkeley , we are dedicated to fostering a community where everyone feels welcome and can thrive. Our culture of openness, freedom, and belonging makes it a special place for students, faculty, and staff, who are among the most talented and accomplished anywhere, including Nobel laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, and MacArthur Fellows. Since our founding in 1868, we have been an engine for innovation - driving intellectual, economic, and social progress that benefits California, the U.S., and beyond. Together, we change the world.

At Berkeley, the best careers are built on a foundation of continuous learning and growth . We actively support professional development by providing all full-time staff employees with at least 80 hours of paid time per year and provide space for supportive colleague communities via numerous employee resource groups.

The College of Letters & Science is the largest of the university's 15 colleges and schools and the most prestigious teaching and research unit in the UC system. L&S encompasses more than half of the campus faculty, three-quarters of its undergraduate students, and half of its Ph.D. candidates. Organized into five divisions: Arts and Humanities, Biological Sciences, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, and the Undergraduate Division, L&S offers students a choice of more than 70 departmental majors, joint majors, and simultaneous degree programs.

The L&S Office of Undergraduate Advising (OUA) provides academic advising to newly admitted, currently enrolled, and readmitted undergraduate students (approximately 23,000). Additionally, OUA provides guidance on academic programs, policies, and procedures in the College of Letters & Science. OUA enforces and adjudicates the College's academic regulations to ensure the integrity of the degree and the continuing quality of the institution. Decisions made by OUA impact all academic units within the College of Letters & Science and set precedent for other Colleges on campus.

OUA works collaboratively with academic and administrative departments across campus. To enhance the student experience, OUA uses a division- and academic-discipline-based Advising Neighborhood model, resulting in College Advisers and Undergraduate Major Advisers working closely and collaboratively.

The Intake Advisor serves as the first point of contact for students requesting OUA services, overseeing the virtual and in-person front desks and the general email advising services. This position clarifies College policies and procedures, provides guidance on petition and form submissions, and helps students determine whether to schedule an appointment with an L&S College Adviser or other campus resource. The Intake Advisor applies professional concepts to provide prescriptive academic advising on requirements with clear guidelines and makes appropriate referrals for complex cases outside the scope of the role.
