Distinct | North America is seeking an Insurance Defense Trial Associate for a fully remote position based out of San Diego. The role pays $150,000 to $170,000 annually.

You’ll manage your own California defense files, take depositions, and handle law and motion, reporting to the carrier along the way. Early on, you’ll be second chairing, with opportunities to expand into general liability, product liability, and toxic tort cases across states with colleagues already handling such matters.

• At least two years in civil litigation or insurance defense.
• Must be admitted to the California Bar.
• Willingness to go to trial despite continuances.

The partner who hired you said you'd be second chairing within a year. The year after that your first trial got continued twice and then settled in the hallway outside the courtroom, and you'd given up a whole weekend building a binder that nobody opened. By year three you'd stopped asking about trial at your review, because the answer was always the same and you were getting tired of hearing it.

Lots of San Diego defense careers go roughly like that and this seat is for the people who'd like theirs to go differently. The firm is a national defense outfit that tries cases, often enough that the plaintiff bar in town knows it, and associates get on their feet in front of juries. Stay a few years and you leave with a trial record you can point to.

Day to day you'd carry your own insurance defense files from home, take depositions, run law and motion and report straight to the carrier, and pick up some commercial work along the way. Later on there's general liability, product liability and toxic tort to move into if you fancy it, with colleagues in other states who've already tried the case that's keeping you up at night.

The pay is $150,000 to $170,000.
