Responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of insurance defense and legal malpractice matters from inception through resolution.

• Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, mediation statements, and settlement agreements.
• Attend court hearings, mediations, arbitrations, and trials.
• Analyze claims, assess liability and damages, and develop litigation strategies.
• Communicate with clients, adjusters, experts, and opposing counsel.
• Conduct legal research and prepare case analyses and coverage recommendations.
• Maintain deadlines, guidelines, and client reporting requirements.
• Collaborate with partners on high-exposure matters.

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Insurance Defense / Legal Malpractice Attorney to join our growing litigation practice in St. Louis, Missouri. This position is ideal for an attorney with 3 to 5 years of litigation experience who is looking to manage a sophisticated caseload, work directly with clients, and gain meaningful courtroom experience.

The successful candidate will represent insurance carriers, businesses, professionals, and attorneys in a variety of complex civil litigation matters, including insurance defense, legal malpractice, professional liability, and related disputes.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of insurance defense and legal malpractice matters from inception through resolution.
• Conduct all phases of litigation, including case evaluation, written discovery, depositions, motion practice, and trial preparation.
• Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, mediation statements, and settlement agreements.
• Attend and participate in court hearings, mediations, arbitrations, and trials.
• Analyze claims, assess liability and damages exposure, and develop litigation strategies.
• Communicate effectively with clients, insurance adjusters, expert witnesses, and opposing counsel.
• Conduct legal research and prepare comprehensive case analyses and coverage-related recommendations.
• Maintain compliance with court deadlines, litigation management guidelines, and client reporting requirements.
• Collaborate with partners and litigation teams on complex and high-exposure matters.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
• Active license to practice law in Missouri (Illinois licensure is a plus).
• 3 to 5 years of litigation experience, preferably in:
• Insurance defense
• Legal malpractice defense
• Professional liability
• General civil litigation
• Experience taking and defending depositions.
• Strong legal writing, analytical, and advocacy skills.
• Ability to independently manage cases and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent interpersonal and client relationship management skills.
• Admission in both Missouri and Illinois.

Preferred

• Experience handling legal malpractice or other professional liability matters.
• Trial, arbitration, or significant courtroom experience.
• Experience working directly with insurance carriers and claims professionals.
