Job description

Description: Journeyman:

Typically 3 years and above documented field experience in chosen craft discipline with ability to read and interpret instructions and document, plan, and perform work activities independently.

Summary:

Apply, remove, and repair insulation on equipment, pipes, ductwork, or other mechanical systems such as heat exchangers, hot and cold pipes, storage tanks, and vessels to help control noise and maintain temperatures.

Responsibilities:
  1. Read and interpret blueprints, instructions, and other documentation or plan work activities.
  2. Determine the amounts and select required insulation material (in sheet, tubular, or roll form), such as fiberglass, foam rubber, Styrofoam, cork, or urethane, based on material's ability to retain heat, location, surface, shape, and equipment use.
  3. Move materials and equipment to work locations and set up work site.
  4. Cover, seal, or finish insulated surfaces or access holes with plastic covers, canvas strips, sealants, tape, cement, or asphalt mastic.
  5. Fit insulation around obstructions, and shape insulating materials and protective coverings as required.
  6. Install sheet metal around insulated pipes with screws to protect insulation from weather and physical damage.
  7. Measure and cut insulation for covering surfaces, using tape measures, handsaws, knives, and scissors.
  8. Prepare surfaces for insulation application by brushing or spreading adhesives, cement, or asphalt, or attaching metal pins.
  9. Seal insulation with preformed plastic covers, canvas strips, sealant, or tape to secure insulation to structures, using appropriate tools.
  10. Follow all hazardous waste handling guidelines.
  11. May remove or seal off old asbestos insulation following safety procedures.
  12. Complete records, maintain tools and equipment, and perform clean-up activities.
  13. Observe and comply with all safety and project rules, including wearing required personal safety equipment.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent with experience in the field or related area.
  • Knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures within the field.
  • Dependence on instructions and pre-established guidelines.
  • Work under immediate supervision; independent judgment not typically required.
  • Report to a supervisor or manager.
Physical Requirements:

Strength, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, fingering, with specific details on frequency and weight limits.
