Hutco, Inc. is seeking experienced Marine Pipe Coverers / Insulators for shipbuilding work in Newport News, Virginia. The Portsmouth branch is involved and the rate of pay is up to $27.31 per hour.

This role covers installation, removal, repair, and finishing of insulation on steam piping systems and shipboard equipment, including turbines and pumps, with emphasis on safe operation in an active shipyard.

DESCRIPTION

Hutco, Inc. is currently seeking experiencedMarine Pipe Coverers / Insulators for shipbuilding work in Newport News, Virginia.

This position involves the installation, removal, repair, and finishing of insulation materials on various steam piping systems and shipboard equipment, including turbines, pumps, and related components. Qualified candidates must demonstrate quality workmanship, proper insulation application techniques, and the ability to work safely in an active shipyard environment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Install, remove, and repair molded pipe insulation, Temp-Mat, and block insulation on steam piping systems and associated equipment.

Work with various insulation materials, including calcium silicate, Temp-Mat, and finishing cement.

Measure, cut, fit, and install molded insulation sections on piping systems of varying sizes.

Demonstrate proper insulation cutting techniques, including accurately cutting and fitting miters.

Cut and apply fiberglass cloth over insulated sections, ensuring a smooth finish without excessive adhesive buildup.

Apply adhesives and finishing materials while using masking, drop cloths, and other protective measures to prevent damage or contamination of adjacent surfaces.

Perform insulation installation and repair work on shipboard equipment, including turbines, pumps, and other components.

Maintain high-quality workmanship and follow established shipyard safety procedures.

Perform additional duties as assigned by supervision.

EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS

Must have 1–3 years of experience as a Marine Pipe Coverer working on steam piping systems.

Must have experience installing molded pipe sections, Temp-Mat, and block insulation.

Must be familiar with calcium silicate insulation, finishing cement, and fiberglass cloth application.

Must demonstrate the ability to properly cut, fit, and finish insulation materials.

Must be capable of working safely around active shipyard operations and moving equipment.

PHYSICAL / WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to climb vertical ladders.

Must be able to bend, squat, kneel, and perform physically demanding work.

Must be comfortable working in confined spaces.

Must be capable of working around moving machinery and equipment.

Must be able to comply with all required PPE and shipyard safety procedures.

MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must be able to complete applicable occupational medical evaluations and testing, including:

MSA Comfo Classic half-mask respirator fit test.

Pulmonary function test (spirometry).

Silica medical surveillance.

Chest X-ray / B-read.

Audiogram.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

Required protective equipment may include:

Safety glasses.

Hearing protection / earmuffs.

Half-mask respirator.

Full-face respirator.
