Overview

We have an exciting career opportunity for an Instrumentation Technician Level I/II to join our team!

The Instrumentation Technician Level I is the entry level electronics and instrumentation position within in the Wastewater Treatment Division. The incumbent should have prior experience, education or demonstrated ability for this type of work. They work under the direction of the Area Maintenance Supervisor and receive technical instruction and guidance from the Instrumentation Technician Level II and Control System Technician. Work schedules are fixed and rotating shifts as needed to provide 24-hour coverage 7 days a week. The position is responsible for and requires the necessary skills to test, calibrate, and repair various types of equipment including, but not limited to, pneumatic, hydraulic and electronic controllers, incineration and air emissions controls, gas analyzers, density meters, flow meters, pressure transmitters, pH probes, dissolved oxygen, ammonia and dissolved solids analyzers, ultraviolet light transmittance meters, turbidity meters and various other types of transmitters and level controllers. Instrumentation Technicians also troubleshoot and repair minor control system problems including control wiring and electrical control devices. The instrument technician will also perform basic troubleshooting of existing PLC and HMI programs and works with the other trades to solve technical challenges. The position is also required to have the knowledge and skill to work near voltages ranging from 4 volts up to 4,160 and is responsible for communicating, requesting, and applying Lock-Out-Tag-Out to equipment for repair and or maintenance. Must know and comply with all company safety, health policies and procedures applicable to work performance. Must be able to work overtime as circumstances require and share on-call responsibilities.

The Instrumentation and Control Technician Level II is considered a fully qualified technician within the Wastewater Treatment division. The incumbent must have prior experience and education for this type of work. They work independently but under the direction of the Area Maintenance Supervisor. Additionally, the Instrumentation Technician Level II guides and assists the work of Level I technicians. Work schedules are fixed and rotating shifts as needed to provide 24-hour coverage 7 days a week. Responsibilities

Instrumentation Technician Level I

  • Test, calibrate, repair, or replace instrumentation, and process analyzers by using specialized equipment including, but not limited to, oscilloscopes, frequency meters, voltmeters, AMP and OHM meters, capacitor, transistor testers and laboratory test solutions.
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation, electronic and electrical problems using schematics, diagrams, and manuals. Perform lock-out of equipment (50v to 480v) as needed to perform repairs. Troubleshoot control system problems using PLC and HMI software.
  • Documents tests and calibrations results using forms and computers systems in compliance with EPA, IDEM and Citizens Water Authority regulations. Document work activities within the maintenance management system.
  • Update schematics, wiring diagrams and manuals as necessary.
  • Conduct instrument and analyzer troubleshooting through online research and direct contact with vendors and consultants. Obtain quotes and initiate procurement process to complete work.
  • Perform other work or duties as circumstances require.

Instrumentation Technician Level II

  • Test, calibrate, repair, or replace instrumentation, and process analyzers by using specialized equipment including, but not limited to, oscilloscopes, frequency meters, voltmeters, AMP and OHM meters, capacitor, transistor testers and laboratory test solutions.
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation, electronic and electrical problems using schematics, diagrams, and manuals. Perform lock-out of high voltage equipment (50 to 480) as needed to perform repairs.
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation and control system problems using PLC and HMI software.
  • Documents tests and calibrations results using forms and computers systems in compliance with EPA, IDEM and Citizens Water Authority regulations. Participate in or conduct research on instrumentation operations in response to questions from environmental professionals. Document work activities within the maintenance management system.
  • Update schematics, wiring diagrams, forms, standard operating procedures, and manuals as necessary.
  • Conduct equipment troubleshooting and research through online and direct contact with vendors and consultants. Obtain quotes and initiate procurement process to complete work.
  • Perform other work or duties as circumstances require.
Qualifications

Instrumentation Technician Level I

  • 0 to 3 years of experience as an Instrumentation or Controls Technician, or Electronic or Electrical Technician in an industrial process environment. Up to 2 years of technical education or current enrollment at a college, trade school, or equivalent may be substituted for experience.
  • Must have general electrical, electronics and control system knowledge and experience as well as knowledge of various control signal transmitters, industrial instruments, AC motor speed controllers and PLC automation devices.
  • Ability to read and understand operating manuals and written instructions, blueprints, and technical materials. Must have knowledge of basic and advanced math skills, knowledge of mechanical principles, and basic knowledge of electricity.
  • Knowledge of Lock-Out-Tag-Out, Arc Flash, Fall Protection and Confined Space OSHA safety procedures.
  • Must pass a heat stress test if requested.
  • Must be able to work and be available to work overtime as circumstances requires and share on-call responsibilities when requested.
  • Must be able to work in all inclement weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift up to a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Must have and maintain a valid Indiana driver’s license.

Instrumentation Technician Level II

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as an Instrumentation or Controls Technician Level I and/or Electrician Level II in an industrial process environment. Up to two 2 years of education at a college, trade school, or equivalent may be substituted for experience.
  • Level I Control System Technician (CST) Certificate or obtain certification within 2 years of start date through training offered by Citizens Energy Group.
  • RS Logix Maintainer Certificate or obtain certification within 2 years of start date through training offered by Citizens Energy Group.
  • Must have general electrical, electronics, control system knowledge, experience as well as knowledge of various control signal transmitters and industrial instrumentation and PLC automation devices.
  • Ability to read and understand operating manuals, written instructions, blueprints, and technical materials. Must have knowledge of basic and advanced math skills, knowledge of mechanical and electrical principles.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Knowledge of Lock-Out-Tag-Out, Arc Flash, Fall Protection and Confined Space OSHA safety procedures.
  • Must pass a heat stress test if requested.
  • Must be able to work and be available to work overtime as circumstances requires and share on-call responsibilities when requested.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications

Instrumentation Technician Level I

  • 3 years’ experience programming and troubleshooting PLC’s, HMI software and PLC programming software.
  • RS Logix Programmer Certificate
  • Documented completion of courses or certification in process control, instrumentation or electronics from a college, trade school, or equivalent.
  • Certified Control System Technician (CST) Level I.Knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems.

Instrumentation Technician Level II

  • Minimum 3 to 5 years’ experience working with and troubleshooting Allen Bradley PLC’s, Factory Talk and RS logic software.
  • Documented completion of courses or certification in process control, instrumentation or electronics from a college, trade school, or equivalent.
  • Licensed Electrician and/or Certified Control System Technician Level II.
  • Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in a related technical field.
  • Knowledge of INFOR EAM computerized maintenance management system.
