Job summary

Optimized Process Designs (OPD), a Koch Engineered Solutions company, seeks an Instrumentation Lead to guide instrumentation scope from early development to commissioning on EPC projects in the energy sector. You will own instrument specification, procurement, and documentation in SPI, coordinating with vendors and cross-functional teams to ensure on-time execution.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or higher in an engineering or technology discipline.
  • Experience with EPC project flow in refinery, chemical, power plant or midstream industries.
  • Working knowledge of API, PIP, ASME, ISA codes and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Lead instrumentation scope from development through commissioning and turnover.
  • Develop, review, and markup P&IDs, ensuring SPI documentation accuracy.
  • Own instrumentation specification, selection, and procurement including valves, regulators, and metering devices.
  • Coordinate with vendors and procurement to obtain quotes, perform bid evaluations, and issue POs.
  • Review equipment packages and installation requirements for constructability and compliance.
  • Collaborate with Process, Mechanical, Electrical, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning teams to remove barriers.
  • Maintain Instrument Indexes, Datasheets, and SPI databases to project standards.
  • Support construction and commissioning by resolving technical issues and ensuring readiness.
  • Build client and vendor relationships through proactive communication and value delivery.
  • Develop team capability through coaching and process improvements.

Instrumentation Lead

Optimized Process Designs (OPD), a Koch Engineered Solutions company, is seeking an Instrumentation Lead to join their team. The role is responsible for leading and managing the specification and procurement of all instrumentation in an EPC project, from early development phase to commissioning and turnover. The ideal candidate for this role will have experience with customer interaction, detailed design to construction and has previously worked in SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI). This role will not only be the point person on a project for Instrumentation, but will also participate in instrumentation specification and design.

Location and Visa

This role will sit at our headquarters in Katy, TX Monday - Friday.

What You Will Do
  • Lead the Instrumentation scope throughout the project lifecycle, from project development through commissioning and turnover, ensuring safe and timely project execution.
  • Develop, review, and markup P&IDs to ensure compliance with company, client, ISA, and applicable industry standards while maintaining accurate project documentation within SPI.
  • Own the specification, selection and procurement of instrumentation, including control valves, regulators, flowmeters, and pressure, temperature, level and flow measurement devices.
  • Collaborate with vendors and procurement teams to obtain quotations, perform technical bid evaluations, issue purchase orders, and ensure instrumentation is delivered to support project and field installation schedules.
  • Review equipment packages and instrument installation requirements to ensure compliance with project specifications, client requirements, and constructability needs.
  • Coordinate effectively with Process, Mechanical, Civil/Structural, Electrical, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning teams to remove barriers and achieve project objectives.
  • Ensure maintenance of accurate and timely Instrument Indexes, Datasheets, Instrument Project Plans and Trackers, and SPI databases in accordance with departmental and project standards.
  • Support construction and commissioning activities by resolving technical issues and ensuring instrumentation readiness.
  • Build trusted relationships with clients, vendors, contractors, and internal stakeholders through proactive communication and a commitment to delivering value.
  • Develop team capability through coaching, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement of work processes and standards.
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
  • Associate's degree or higher in an engineering or technology discipline
  • Experience with EPC project flow in refinery, chemical, power plant or midstream industries
  • Working knowledge of Codes and Standards such as API, PIP, ASME, ISA, etc.
What Will Put You Ahead
  • Experience using SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI) software
  • Experience with Fisher control valve sizing software
  • Professional Engineering license
