Job summary

Arcadis is seeking an Instrumentation & Controls Intern with an interest in the municipal water/wastewater industry to join our Resilience team in Columbus, OH for Summer 2027. As an I&C Intern, you will collaborate with our experienced professionals, providing technical and design consulting services focusing on instrumentation, controls systems, and related network infrastructure.

You may engage in field inspections, QA/QC activities, and supporting electrical design for medium/low voltage

Qualifications

• Actively pursuing bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related field.
• Local candidates preferred (Columbus, OH area).

Responsibilities

• Prepare technical memorandums and develop design criteria.
• Craft SCADA architectures, network designs, P&IDs, and functional narratives.
• Create specifications, control schematics, panel layouts, and interconnection diagrams.
• Coordinate with process, mechanical, and electrical engineers.
• Review submittals, analyze shop drawings, and respond to RFIs during construction.
• May participate in field inspections and QA/QC of completed work; assist with electrical design for distribution and grounding.

Role description:

Arcadis is looking for an Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Intern with an interest in the municipal water/wastewater industry to join our growing Resilience team in Columbus, OH for Summer 2027.

As an Instrumentation and Controls Intern, you will collaborate with our experienced team of professionals, providing technical and design consulting services with a focus on instrumentation, controls systems, and associated network and communications infrastructure for municipal water and wastewater conveyance and treatment facilities.

As an I&C Intern, you will work in a collaborative environment, focusing on evaluating and designing control system solutions that align with client needs.

Role accountabilities:

• Prepare technical memorandums and develop comprehensive design criteria
• Craft SCADA system architectures, communication system and network designs, process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), SCADA network diagrams, and process control functional narratives.
• Create specifications, control schematics, panel layout diagrams, interconnection diagrams, and other I&C design documents
• Coordinate with process, mechanical, and electrical engineers assigned to the project
• Perform engineering services during the construction phase, which involves reviewing equipment and software submittals, analyzing shop drawings, and responding to contractor RFIs (requests for information).

As an intern, you may also have the opportunity to join our team while conducting field inspections and identify deviations from design, perform general quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) of completed work, and monitor safety compliance. You will provide electrical design and coordination for various projects, with a focus on medium and low voltage power distribution, motor controls, lighting, and grounding systems, particularly for water and wastewater projects.

The ideal candidate demonstrates the ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously while meeting project deadlines and completing task-driven objectives. They bring experience in applying instrumentation and controls to process and electromechanical equipment, along with a basic understanding of industrial network design and implementation. Basic knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office applications-including Word, Excel, MS Project, and Outlook-is important. Travel is required to support project needs, primarily in the Columbus area, and may constitute approximately 5 to 10% of your time. A valid driver's license, a clean driving record, and a willingness to travel for site-specific services are essential for success in this role.
