Job summary

Fairview Health Services at the University of Minnesota West Bank Hospital in Minneapolis is hiring an Instrument Technician to support the OR for upcoming surgeries and emergencies on a 1.0 FTE third shift.

You will decontaminate, clean, process, assemble, sterilize, store and distribute reusable instruments and devices, serving physicians, nurses and staff. The role requires CRCST certification and two years of sterile processing experience or completion of a Central Service program.

Qualifications

• 6 months OR or medical device reprocessing experience or completion of Fairview Sterile Processing program.
• Two years of experience as Sterile Processing Technician, Surgical Technologist, or related.
• CRCST certification

Responsibilities

• Assist with case cart assembly and intraoperative supply handling.
• Inspect, test, assemble, package and label instruments for sterilization.
• Ensure instruments are ready for CSSD-CPC trays and site workflows.
• Perform manual decontamination and operate sterilization equipment.
• Coordinate with OR staff on instrument readiness and needs.

Fairview's University of Minnesota West Bank Hospital, has an immediate opening for an Instrument Technician! We support the OR for upcoming surgery cases as well as responding to emergency cases.

Fairview's University of Minnesota West Bank Hospital, has an immediate opening for an Instrument Technician! We support the OR for upcoming surgery cases as well as responding to emergency cases. This is a 1.0 FTE (80 hours every 2 weeks), benefits-eligible opening on third shift, 10:45PM - 07:15AM Monday - Friday, weekends as needed. As an Instrument Technician, you will provide surgical instruments and supplies needed for procedures and cases. Decontaminates, cleans, processes, assembles, sterilizes, stores, and distributes reusable instruments and medical devices. Serves as a resource to physicians, nurses, and medical staff regarding instruments and supplies.

Job Expectations

• Job expectations may vary depending on location and services provided. Sites may perform surgical case cart assembly, intraoperative supply picking, and high-level disinfection of flexible endoscopes and other semi-critical devices.
• Reviews and interprets all resources needed to determine the priority of instruments and medical devices required.
• Inspects, tests, assembles, packages, and labels surgical instruments in preparation for sterilization.
• Ensures instruments are available and ready for site-specific and System CSSD-CPC trays.
• Performs manual decontamination of reusable instruments and equipment.
• Follows manufacturers written instructions for use and system policies and procedures.
• Operates automated and non-automated processing equipment such as instrument washers, sterilizers, biological incubators, heat sealers, and other commonly used equipment in sterile processing.
• Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level and cultural differences of the population served.

Required

Experience

6 months experience in an operating room, medical device reprocessing role or related role OR completion of an approved Fairview Sterile Processing training program

Preferred

Education

Graduate of a Central Service program, Accredited Surgical Technologist program or Licensed Practical Nurse program.

Experience

Two years of experience as a Sterile Processing Technician, a Surgical Technologist, or in a medical device reprocessing role.

License/Certification/Registration

Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification

• Strong situational prioritization skills - knowing which trays must be turned over first based on case urgency, specialty needs, and OR workflow
• Technical troubleshooting - identifying issues with washers, sterilizers, power equipment, or instrument functions
• Cross-department communication - effectively coordinating with OR charge nurses, materials management
• Process improvement mindset - spotting inefficiencies, reducing tray errors
• Endoscope reprocessing experience - high level disinfection and IFU adherence
• Experience with complex instrument trays - Robotics (Da Vinci), neuro, micro-instruments (eyes), dental
