Job summary

The Instrument Technician at Phillips 66 Lake Charles Refinery works in the maintenance department, performing installation, calibration, repair and troubleshooting of refinery instrumentation across areas exposed to weather and hazards. The role requires a journeyman level craftsman with safety awareness and the ability to work overtime.

On-site responsibilities include maintaining analyzers, tuning control loops, overhauling valves, and coordinating tasks while adhering to company policies.

Qualifications

• Requires journeyman level experience in oil refinery or similar facility.

• Willing to obtain TWIC; able to lift up to 50 lb and work at heights.

The Instrument Technician, Lake Charles Refinery works in the maintenance department of the refinery. The positions are straight day jobs, subject to occasional shift work, turnarounds, call outs and mandatory overtime. Instrument Technicians are responsible for the installation, preventive maintenance, calibration, repair, and troubleshooting of refinery process control instrumentation. This work takes place in all areas of the refinery, outside exposed to the weather elements and to blowing air, heat, noise and vibration. The refinery processes involve hazardous and volatile materials under high temperatures and pressures. The work may take place at heights on vessels and towers and/or in confined spaces.

What You’ll Do

• Installing, removing, calibrating and repairing of refinery electronic digital and analog and pneumatic process control instruments
• Installing and maintaining on-line analyzers
• Tuning Instrument control loops
• Testing and maintaining Instrument Safety Systems
• Troubleshooting, maintaining and overhauling process control valves
• Fabricating small diameter instrument tubing
• Testing and troubleshooting programmable logic controllers
• Preparing schematic drawings, sketches and reports to reflect activities
• Coordinating work of others as needed
• Assuring compliance with all company policies and procedures and training requirements

What You’ll Bring - Required

• Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent
• Valid driver's license
• 3 or more years of experience as a journeyman level Instrument Craftsperson in an oil refinery, chemical process, electric utility, electrical distribution equipment testing or similar facility
• Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). Information can be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic
• Willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to:
  • Lift up to 50 pounds
  • Climb up to 285 feet in height
  • Work overtime
  • Work near large, hot, high-speed machines
  • Work in enclosed spaces, such as tanks and silos
  • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases, that may be under high pressure
  • Work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and heat
  • Work outside in harsh weather conditions
  • Read at a level to understand safety procedures, work procedures, work permits, and instruction manuals written in English
  • Maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
  • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (including but not limited to items such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection, and fall protection)

What Makes You Stand Out - Preferred

• Completion of an industrial instrument craft apprenticeship or a relevant Associate’s degree
• Strong oral and written communication skills pertaining to documenting inspection and repair information
• Proficiency in computer usage basics including e-mail, Windows navigation, SAP
• Ability to understand systems such as gas chromatograph, TDL, moisture, O2, and CEMS analyzer systems
• Experience with control system networking systems, such as modbus, serial, ethernet, etc.

Compensation

The hourly rate for this position is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The starting 2nd class Craft Worker rate is currently $51.42 per hour. The 1st class Craft Worker rate is currently $54.65 per hour.

Relocation assistance is not available for this position. Benefits include 8% 401k match, Cash Balance Account pension, and 7.5% annual (VCIP) cash bonus target.

The Lake Charles Refinery is located in Westlake, Louisiana. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. Facilities also include a specialty coker and calciner. The refinery processes a mixture of light to heavy, low- and high sulfur and low- and high-acid crude oils. It receives domestic, Canadian and other foreign crude oil through truck, pipeline, marine transportation and terminals, including the Beaumont and Clifton Ridge terminals and the Bayou Bridge Pipeline. Lake Charles produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include off-road diesel, home heating oil, feedstock for our Excel Paralubes joint venture, specialty graphite petroleum coke and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed in the southeastern and eastern United States by truck, rail car, barge or pipelines and exported to Latin America and West Africa.
