Job summary

Topographic, Inc. in the United States is seeking a Rod Person/Instrument Tech to join a small field crew and perform control and topographic surveys.

You will work outdoors, travel to designated sites, read plans, operate surveying instruments and calculators, and ensure safety. Relocation is required and a valid driver’s license is essential. Long hours and physical work are expected.

Qualifications

  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and written/oral communication skills.
  • Physically able to work long hours and carry heavy loads.

Responsibilities

  • Work primarily in the field on control, topographic surveys, and pipeline surveys as Rod Person/Instrument Tech of a two- or three-person field crew at an assigned worksite.
  • Cut and remove brush for line-of-sight; read and understand plans and specifications.
  • Know basic sources of measurement errors; perform calculations and field checks of data.
  • Dig, set stakes, and locate survey monuments; hold and plum rod for elevations and distances; drive stakes for grades.
  • Provide quality customer service and maintain safe operating methods for tools and equipment.

Hours

Mon-Sat 7:00 am to 5:00 pm; other hours and days may be necessary to meet the objectives of the position.

Essential Functions

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Will work primarily in the field on control, topographic surveys, and pipeline surveys as Rod Person/Instrument Tech of a two or three-person field crew at an assigned worksite.

  • Cut and remove brush and undergrowth for line-of-sight.
  • Performs mathematical calculations and field checking of field data.
  • Read and understand plans and specifications.
  • Know basic sources of measurement errors.
  • Dig ground using a pick, shovel, and other hand tools to search for and locate survey monuments.
  • Hold and plum rod in obtaining elevations and distances.
  • Drive stakes to set grades on construction projects.
  • Provide quality customer service.
  • Know, understand, and demonstrate safe working/operating methods of assigned tools and equipment.
Experience
  • A minimum of 1-year total survey field experience is highly preferred.
  • Must be experienced in controlling the function of surveying instruments and calculators.
Required Education

A high school education or equivalent.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, walk, and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee may be asked to walk on uneven surfaces, lift and carry up to 50 pounds, hike up and down steep slopes carrying up to 50 pounds of survey equipment, bend, squat, dig monument holes, pound in stakes and rebar monuments, carry and use brush cutting equipment, drive a four-wheeler or snowmobile, climb stairs, sit for extended periods of time, work at a computer terminal for extended periods of time, type/key-in data, and answer telephones frequently as needed.

Mental Demands

The following mental demands are required to perform the essential functions of this job: concentrate, conceptualize, cooperative work with others/teamwork, detailed work, frequent task changes, irregular schedule as needed, learn new tasks, interruptive /distractive environment, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, reasoning, problem-solving, time pressures.
