Qualifications

  • 3+ years of Instrumentation Fitter experience in industrial environments.
  • Experience with instrumentation tubing installation and pneumatic systems.
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, isometrics, and steam tracing detail drawings.

Job description

UPS Industrial Services is seeking Instrument Fitters to join our safety conscious team. The Instrument Fitter is responsible for the installation, maintenance, calibration support, repair, and troubleshooting of industrial instrumentation systems and related equipment. This role ensures that process control instruments, tubing systems, control valves, transmitters, analyzers, and associated equipment operate safely, reliably, and in accordance with company standards, project specifications, and regulatory requirements. The Instrumentation Fitter works closely with Instrument Technicians, Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering personnel to support plant reliability, production efficiency, and safety performance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install instrument tubing, impulse lines, pneumatic systems, supports, and mounting hardware.
  • Install pressure, temperature, flow, and level instrumentation in accordance with project drawings and specifications.
  • Install instrument stands, brackets, cable trays, junction boxes, and associated hardware.
  • Fit and assemble tubing systems using compression fittings and bending equipment.
  • Assist with installation of control valves, actuators, analyzers, and field instrumentation.
  • Interpret and work from P&IDs, loop drawings, isometrics, hook-up drawings, and construction specifications.
  • Install, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot steam tracing systems used for process piping, instrumentation, tanks, and equipment.
  • Read and interpret P&IDs, isometric drawings, specifications, and work packages to ensure proper steam trace installation and routing.
  • Install steam tracer tubing, tubing supports, valves, fittings, insulation, and weatherproof jacketing in accordance with project standards and client specifications.
  • Verify steam tracing systems are installed correctly to maintain required process temperatures and provide freeze protection.
  • Perform inspections, pressure testing, and commissioning support for steam tracing systems.
  • Coordinate with piping, insulation, and operations personnel to ensure proper integration of steam trace systems.
  • Identify and resolve issues related to heat loss, condensate buildup, steam leaks, and inadequate temperature control.
  • Adhere to all site safety requirements, quality standards, and environmental regulations while performing steam tracing activities.
Maintenance & Repair
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on instrumentation systems.
  • Remove, repair, replace, and reinstall instrument components as required.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and pneumatic issues affecting instrumentation performance.
  • Inspect and repair tubing leaks, faulty fittings, damaged supports, and mounting assemblies.
  • Assist with shutdown, turnaround, and commissioning activities.
Safety & Compliance
  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and permit-to-work requirements.
  • Participate in Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), toolbox talks, and risk assessments.
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA regulations and site-specific safety requirements.
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with applicable industry standards and quality requirements.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas.
Documentation
  • Record maintenance activities and completed work orders.
  • Report equipment deficiencies and recommend corrective actions.
  • Assist in updating drawings, redlines, and maintenance records when required.
  • Maintain accurate records of installed equipment and modifications.
Required Qualifications
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Technical training in Instrumentation, Industrial Maintenance, Mechanical Fitting, or a related field preferred.
Experience
  • 3+ years of experience as an Instrumentation Fitter and installing and maintaining steam tracing systems in an industrial, petrochemical, refining, LNG, power generation, manufacturing, or related environment preferred.
  • Experience with instrumentation tubing installation and pneumatic systems.
  • Familiarity with industrial process equipment and instrumentation systems.
  • Knowledge of steam distribution, condensate return systems, heat transfer principles, and insulation practices.
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, isometrics, and steam tracing detail drawings.
Technical Skills
  • Ability to read and interpret:
  • Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Loop drawings
  • Isometric drawings
  • Mechanical and construction drawings
  • Knowledge of instrument tubing installation and bending techniques.
  • Familiarity with control valves, transmitters, switches, analyzers, and pneumatic systems.
  • Skilled in the use of hand tools, power tools, tubing benders, and testing equipment.
  • Understanding of industrial safety practices and lockout/tagout procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
  • NCCER Instrument Fitter Certification or equivalent.
  • TWIC Card (where applicable).
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
  • Experience working in refineries, chemical plants, offshore facilities, or EPC construction projects.
  • Experience with commissioning and startup activities.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, and structures.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, bend, and work in varying environmental conditions for extended periods.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Industrial manufacturing facilities, refineries, petrochemical plants, terminals, power plants, or construction sites.
  • Exposure to heat, noise, weather conditions, and industrial hazards.
  • May require overtime, shift work, weekends, holidays, and turnaround/shutdown schedules.
