Job summary

Management & Training Corporation (MTC) seeks a QMED-Oiler Instructor for the Tongue Point Job Corps Center in Astoria, OR. You will pass on maritime engineering expertise, lead the next generation of engineers, and oversee hands-on training and safety on training vessels.

You will design lessons, supervise practical exercises, and serve as Chief Engineer during underway training 1–2 times weekly, while mentoring students and maintaining curriculum standards.

Qualifications

  • Must hold a valid QMED credential issued by USCG.
  • STCW endorsement for engineering, including advanced safety and firefighting.
  • Extensive sea experience in engineering roles.
  • Familiarity with applicable maritime regulations and training vessel standards.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver curriculum aligned with USCG-approved engineering curriculum.
  • Teach classes, supervise hands-on training, and lead practical exercises.
  • Serve as Chief Engineer on Tongue Point training vessels during underway sessions (1–2 times/week).
  • Manage and mentor engineering students, monitoring progress and curriculum adherence.
  • Evaluate student progress, provide feedback, and conduct competency assessments.
  • Oversee laboratory and workshop safety, equipment, and simulators.
  • Ensure compliance with maritime safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Pursue ongoing professional development and industry engagement.
  • Build relationships with maritime industry stakeholders to align training with job opportunities.
  • Handle administrative tasks including scheduling, records, and reporting as required.

What you will be doing: You’ll be responsible for pass on your expertise and lead the next generation of engineers. If you're ready to make a lasting impact in maritime education, this role is for you!

Duties Include:
  • Curriculum delivery: Design lessons and practicums that adhere to the USCG-approved engineering curriculum.
  • Instruction and Training: Teach classes, lead practical exercises, and oversee hands‑on training sessions in marine engineering.
  • This position will serve as Chief Engineer on Tongue Point Job Corps training vessels (Ironwood and Columbia) during underway training with students (1-2 times/week).
  • Manage and mentor engineering students, ensuring quality and adherence to curriculum guidelines.
  • Student Assessment: Evaluate student progress, provide feedback, and conduct assessments to ensure competency in maritime engineering skills.
  • Laboratory and Workshop Maintenance: This position oversees the maintenance, safety, and availability of lab equipment, simulators, and engineering workshops.
  • Compliance and Safety: Ensure all training and facilities comply with maritime regulatory standards and safety protocols.
  • Professional Development: Stay current with industry practices, update certifications, and participate in ongoing professional development.
  • Collaboration with the Maritime Industry: Build relationships with industry stakeholders to align training with real-world demands and potential student career opportunities.
  • Administration and Reporting: Manage schedules, record-keeping, and reporting requirements as specified by the DOL, MTC, NMC, and other regulatory bodies as appropriate.
  • Advisory Role: Act as an advisor to students, helping them understand career pathways, licensure, and industry expectations.
Job Requirements
  • Valid and current QMED credential from USCG.
  • STCW Certification: Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) endorsement specific to engineering, including advanced safety and firefighting.
  • Sea Experience: Extensive experience at sea in progressively responsible engineering roles, typically including prior experience.
  • Knowledge of Maritime Regulations: Familiarity with applicable national and international maritime regulations and standards for training vessels.
  • Medical Fitness Certificate: Up-to-date medical certificate confirming fitness for duty at sea.
  • Teaching or Training Certification: Qualification in training or instructing through a USCG-certified Train the Trainer Course.
  • First Aid and CPR Certification: Current certification in first aid, CPR, and emergency response specific to maritime standards.
Preferred:
  • Marine Engineering Degree: Bachelor’s degree in marine engineering or a related field
  • Security Awareness Training: Maritime security certification, such as Vessel Security Officer (VSO) training.
