Job summary

Washington & Jefferson College seeks a Full-Time Nursing Instructor to teach across classroom, lab, simulation, clinical, and online modalities, advancing student success through evidence-based practice and professional nursing standards.

The role emphasizes curriculum development, assessment, accreditation preparation, and student advising, with collaboration among faculty, staff, and clinical partners to promote continuous quality improvement and program excellence.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited institution.
  • Current, active RN license and eligibility for Pennsylvania licensure.
  • Minimum three (3) years of professional clinical nursing experience.
  • Minimum two (2) years of teaching experience in higher education, nursing education, clinical education, or staff development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of nursing curriculum, instructional methods, student assessment, and evidence-based practice.
  • Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, organizational, and collaborative skills.
  • Proficiency with instructional technologies and learning management systems.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate nursing courses in classroom, laboratory, simulation, clinical, hybrid, and/or online environments as assigned.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate evidence-based instructional strategies that promote active learning, clinical judgment, student engagement, and achievement of course outcomes.
  • Prepare and maintain course syllabi, learning activities, examinations, assignments, grading criteria, and other instructional materials consistent with departmental standards.
  • Evaluate student achievement using appropriate formative and summative assessment methods and provide timely, constructive feedback.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, student progress, and required course documentation.
  • Integrate current nursing standards, evidence-based practice, healthcare technologies, patient safety, and professional nursing competencies throughout course delivery.
  • Promote an inclusive, respectful, and student-centered learning environment.
  • Serve as an academic advisor to assigned nursing students.
  • Mentor students regarding academic progression, professional development, licensure preparation, and career planning.
  • Identify students experiencing academic difficulty and collaborate in developing appropriate interventions, remediation, referrals, and academic success plans.
  • Participate in student retention, progression, and success initiatives.
  • Support student leadership, professional engagement, and nursing-related activities.
  • Participate in nursing curriculum planning, implementation, evaluation, and revision.
  • Contribute to development and evaluation of course and program learning outcomes, curriculum mapping, and assessment activities.
  • Collaborate with faculty to promote consistency and continuous improvement across courses and the curriculum.
  • Participate in collection, analysis, and use of assessment data to evaluate student and program outcomes.
  • Support implementation and evaluation of the Department's Systematic Plan of Evaluation.
  • Assist with preparation and maintenance of documentation and evidence for CCNE accreditation, state regulatory requirements, and other program reviews.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement activities based on assessment findings, professional standards, and emerging nursing education practices.
  • Engage in scholarly and professional activities that support teaching excellence, professional growth, and advancement of nursing education and practice.
  • Scholarly activities may include research, evidence-based practice initiatives, publications, presentations, grant activities, and other forms of scholarly contribution.
  • Maintain current knowledge and competence within assigned areas of nursing instruction through continuing education and professional development.
  • Participate in professional nursing and/or nursing education organizations as appropriate.
  • Participate in Department of Nursing and College committees, faculty meetings, governance, and strategic initiatives.
  • Support student recruitment, orientation, admissions activities, program events, and community engagement.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with clinical agencies, healthcare organizations, and community partners.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, administrators, and clinical partners to support student learning and program effectiveness.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Department Chair regarding course, student, clinical, and program matters.
  • Contribute to a collegial, collaborative, and professional departmental environment.

Job description

The Full-Time Nursing Instructor supports the mission, vision, philosophy, and strategic goals of the Department of Nursing and Washington & Jefferson College through excellence in teaching, advising, scholarship, service, and student success.

The Nursing Instructor provides high-quality instruction across classroom, laboratory, simulation, clinical, and experiential learning environments and promotes the development of nursing knowledge, clinical judgment, professional competence, and evidence-based practice. Working collaboratively with the Department Chair, faculty, staff, and clinical partners, the Instructor contributes to curriculum development, program assessment, accreditation, continuous quality improvement, and student engagement.

Faculty responsibilities are aligned with the nursing curriculum, program outcomes, AACN Essentials, CCNE accreditation standards, applicable regulatory requirements, professional nursing standards, and College policies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching and Instruction

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree or higher in Nursing from an appropriately accredited institution.

  • Current, active, and unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license and eligibility for Pennsylvania RN licensure.
  • Minimum three (3) years of professional clinical nursing experience.
  • Minimum two (2) years of teaching experience in higher education, nursing education, clinical education, or staff development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of nursing curriculum, instructional methods, student assessment, and evidence-based practice.
  • Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, organizational, and collaborative skills.
  • Proficiency with instructional technologies and learning management systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching in a prelicensure BSN and/or RN-BSN nursing program.
  • Experience teaching in classroom, clinical, laboratory, and/or simulation environments.
  • Teaching expertise in one or more nursing specialty areas, including but not limited to Medical-Surgical Nursing, Adult Health, Health Assessment, Women's/Maternal-Newborn Health, Pediatrics, Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing, Community/Population Health Nursing, or related areas.
  • Experience with online or hybrid course delivery.
  • Experience with curriculum development, student learning assessment, and program evaluation.
  • Experience with CCNE accreditation and continuous quality improvement or willingness to complete professional development.
  • Demonstrated engagement in scholarship, professional presentations, publications, evidence-based practice, and/or grant activities.
  • Active involvement in professional nursing or nursing education organizations.
