Job Summary

The College of Liberal Arts at Oregon State University ( OSU ) – Cascades in Bend, Oregon invites applications for a full time (1.00 FTE ), 9-month, fixed-term Instructor of Graphic Design position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Dean.

The primary responsibilities of this role will be to teach (and potentially develop) undergraduate courses on-campus in areas of graphic design such as: typography, design tools + techniques, interaction design, design thinking, information design, branding systems, package design, professional development, design theory, graphic design history, etc..

The successful candidate will promote diversity through their pedagogy and student mentoring, as well as collaborate with OSU -Cascades in interdisciplinary community outreach efforts around diversity and the arts. The position is renewable yearly with opportunity for promotion to Senior Instructor.

OSU -Cascades, located in Bend, Oregon, is a branch campus of Oregon State University. Established in 2001, OSU -Cascades now enrolls more than 1000 students in bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. OSU -Cascades currently offers upper division undergraduate and graduate courses.

OSU -Cascades is a small, friendly campus, often selected by students for small class sizes and intimate academic environment to enable meaningful student and faculty interactions. Additionally, the size of the campus encourages a high degree of interdisciplinary interaction and collegiality.

Bend, called the “outdoor playground of the West,”, is world famous for both its outdoor pursuits and pristine beauty. Key Responsibilities

80% – Teach and provide mentoring. Initial assignments will be implementing and delivering instruction in undergraduate Graphic Design, Art or AMT courses and mentoring students in the area.

10% – Maintain currency in the field through activities that lead to personal investment and growth within an area of expertise (either the instructor’s discipline and/or educational pedagogy). This may include, but is not limited to, any of the following: Maintain familiarity with recent developments in evidence-based instructional practices through literature review, workshops, conferences or other activities Maintain currency in academic discipline through professional workshops, conferences, or other professional development activities. Disseminate ideas and methods within the program, university, and broader community.

10%
– Serve on Oregon State University-Cascades committees and service to the community; and other duties as assigned.

What You Will Need

  • Master’s degree in discipline appropriate to the field of teaching/instructional tasks.
  • Minimum two years of teaching experience at the university level.
  • Demonstrated commitment to educational equity in a multicultural setting and a commitment to advancing the participation of diverse groups and supporting diverse perspectives.
  • A demonstrable commitment to collaboration in a professional setting (with inter-and intra-university programs/departments, and/or with external stakeholders).
What We Would Like You to Have
  • Experience in teaching across the Adobe suite with additional consideration for experience with Maya, Grasshopper, and Rhino.
  • Experience in commercial work flow as well as relevant teaching experience in commercial workflow.
  • Background and/or expertise engaging indigenous and/or Latinx communities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and successful application of pedagogical methods that encourage experiential learning and in class reflection on course content.
